The Western States Horse Expo is one of the country's leading equestrian events, sure to pique the interest of any horse enthusiast. Like a horse's opinion of being painted into a picture with Napoleon, the schedule changes day-to-day. The line-up includes horsemanship demonstrations, breeders' showcases, and an art show, as well as special events such as the Magnificent 7 Stock Horse Championship. In this event, 17 of the country's top horse and rider combos compete in four events: herd work, rein work, steer stopping, and fence work. If the well-trained stock horses inspire you to improve your horsemanship skills, you can attend one of the many expo clinics that focus on a variety of topics including rider confidence, reining, colt starting, dressage, and driving.
Perched on a sweeping 28-acre landscape dotted with panoramic pastures and rustic barns, Equine Unlimited has been instructing ground walkers in horseback gallivanting for 25 years. American Riding Association-certified owner and operator Malinda Kregoski and her assistant trainers can help budding equestrians from 3 years old to well over 60 absorb their expertise in grooming, tacking, and riding. Fledgling jockeys can select from English, jumper, and western riding lessons, though jousting lessons are restricted to time-traveling knights. Equine Unlimited's expansive outdoor arena, which is clad in state-of-the-art synthetic-fiber footing, provides top-notch terrain for cantering cowboy and cowgirl trainees.
The team at Lynn Greene Photography has been snapping shots together since 2006—long enough to know that the most important part of their job is, by a happy coincidence, also the most fun. Each session begins with some lighthearted goofing around, establishing a playful tone that helps most people strike a relaxed pose. Their clients range from families to high-school seniors to sexy boudoir models, and they never fail to elicit a natural smile from any of the above. That said, they know when to get serious. They often help out corporate professionals looking for business headshots to separate them from the pack.
Immediately after holding an in-studio or outdoor session, clients are invited to preview their images at the studio. While there, they can decide which pictures to preserve as prints, in coffee-table books, or on fake dollar bills.
Hosted by the upscale Bistro 33 El Dorado, the 2011 Summer Dance Party shuffles feet with musical stylings by Lovefool. A pop cover band playing exclusively '90s hits, Lovefool awakens dormant running-man moves with unforgotten favorites from the sensorial spectrum of Vanilla Ice, Salt-n-Pepa, Green Day, and The Cardigans. Amphitheater space allows for open-air grooving and long-distance slap-bracelet attempts. Dancers can warm up before the show and take in the restaurant’s full food and drink menu, which sates grumbling tummies with a selection of soups, salads, paninis, and other upscale bistro fare.
Located just east of Sacramento in El Dorado Hills, TubeTape.com stocks all the tools and knowledge a beginning hobbyist, professional photographer, or sentient security camera could need. The center’s curriculum of classes includes introductory reviews of video and photography concepts, crash courses in greenscreen editing, and explosive sessions on stunning special effects. Elsewhere in the studio, photographers and videographers happily squeal at the amount of visual-capturing equipment for sale, including chroma-key greenscreens, lighting, software, and effects-editing packages.
