When 2010 U.S. Open winner Graeme McDowell—a fixture among the top 20 golfers in the world for the past three years—needs a bit of swing advice, he often turns to his friend and frequent playing partner, John O'Leary. The head of his eponymous Golf Academy, O'Leary began coaching after experiencing his own share of success in the professional ranks, where he won 15 PGA and mini-tour events and earned a berth in the 2007 PGA Championship. While he occasionally jousts putters with some of the world's top golfers, John's instructional style embraces players of all ages and abilities. With an emphasis on fundamentals and fun, he helps golfers hone everything from swings that produce long, straight drives to strokes that consistently hole short putts. John also makes use of V1 Video Swing analysis and CG2 Launch Monitor by Foresight Sports during lessons, camps, and clinics, allowing his students to see their swing firsthand and determine if they missed a belt loop.

Interspersed with rolling hills, meandering woods, and rippling water obstacles, each of these featured courses provides a challenging round for golfers of any skill level. Designed by renowned course architect and Jack Nicklaus-protégé David Heatwole, 1757's par 70 layout rewards crafty shots made on deceptively subtle greens and around towering brick barriers camouflaged to match the surrounding foliage. 1757's practice facility drills drivers with more than 100 hitting stations of grass and synthetic SportTurf tees, as well as a full short-game training area complete with facsimile fairways, bunkers, and greens. The Virginia Oaks course, considered one of Virginia's most difficult, was designed in 1995 by putting-placement legend P.B. Dye, challenging players with a narrow 18 holes rounded out by artfully placed obstacles. Home to a Nike Golf Learning Center, Reston National provides an accessible environment for players to learn and perfect their strokes away from the incessant creaking of rickety mini-golf windmills.

During the Gold Rush, Prospector Pete staked his claim, eager to find his share of gold. Unfortunately for him, the only thing he dug up was water. Today, at Water Mine Family Swimmin' Hole, Pete's discovery turns summers golden, with more than an acre of water-filled attractions. In the center of the park rises the old mine site, Pete's Peak, where twin water slides carry riders down to the pools at its base as they squeal with glee or try to calculate their speed based on the moon's gravitational pull. Younger splashers get their feet wet at Tenderfoot Pond, and older guests chase down spikes at the water volleyball courts. A lazy day can be spent circling the park in Rattlesnake River, where a slow current saves swimmers the trouble of paddling.
