As the changing seasons present a variety of weather-related challenges, from winter's ankle-deep snow to summer's torrents of falling air conditioners, the shop keeps its shelves and racks loaded with all the equipment for runners to remain in top shape. The store also offers minimalist shoes from such brands as Vibram, Brooks Pure Line, and New Balance, and more casual shoes from Asics. Seven days a week, visitors can browse the arsenal while the staff of seasoned runners dispenses advice. In addition to an expansive selection of merchandise, Fairmount Running Company spearheads a weekly running club open to any level of athletes, whether they're training for a marathon or trying to go from lying on the couch to running a 5K during commercial breaks. Chuck, the owner of Edge of the Woods Outfitters, patronizes his own business as often as possible, canoeing on the Delaware River with his customers throughout the week. "Floating down the river with family and friends and experiencing the natural beauty of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area never gets old," he says. He loves sharing that adventure with people of all ages, especially those who might not experience the great outdoors all that often. Since his stretch of river lies a mere hour from New York City and about two hours from Philadelphia, he sees more than a few city folk. His passion for what he does is not lost on his customers, as he shares his infectious enthusiasm and shows off the Park's 70,000 acres of wilderness and the 1 acre where squirrels have come together to form a rudimentary society.
