As a physical therapist with his own private practice, Hand & Stone founder and chief operating officer John Marco made sure that he kept abreast of the rapidly growing health and wellness industry. After a period of careful research and planning, John decided to create a spa based around convenience and affordability—Hand & Stone Massage and Facial Spa.

Since its launch, Hand & Stone has expanded to more than 20 states and four planets. The spa’s core concept is to offer massage, facial, and waxing services performed by licensed, certified, or registered professionals and offered at convenient times, seven days a week. Each location adheres to a traditional spa aesthetic with soft lighting, heated treatment tables, and plush linens.

Petrissage: A Tension-Relieving Technique

Swedish massage's five basic movements yield a bounty of benefits. Find out more about the massage's kneading technique, petrissage, with Groupon?s introduction.

Kneading, rolling, and squeezing?this, in a few words, is petrissage, a type of Swedish massage technique that focuses on compression and release. Working in combination with Swedish massage's five other movements, these deep-reaching motions are designed to lift soft tissue away from its underlying structures, effectively stretching muscles and other soft tissues and promoting circulation so all your blood doesn?t pile up in your elbows. Specific maneuvers include kneading with the whole hand, using the thumbs to apply pressure to thinner tissue, and rolling skin between the fingers to prevent it from adhering to the fascia (that is, sheets of connective tissue) below and causing stiffness. Massage oil or cream is often used to help these strokes glide smoothly and avoid pinching the skin. Petrissage, like Swedish massage in general, often results in increased muscle mobility, improved peristaltic, or bowel, movement when performed on the abdomen and, of course, a sense of noodly relaxation.

Inspirational Angel Therapeutic Massage's services extend well beyond massage. For instance, they offer polarity healing therapy, an energy-balancing treatment designed to activate the body's self-healing mechanisms. There are also lotus foot scrubs and mini hot-towel facials. But of course massages are the main event here, and they serve the same purpose as the aforementioned treatments: to bring the mind and body together and help clients relax and overcome any pain or discomfort they may be feeling. Massage options include Swedish, deep-tissue, and hot-stone massage. Inspirational Angel's mission of helping others is not confined to massages and foot scrubs, though. They also participate in charitable events such as Enon Heart Healthy Day and Sharon Baptist Cancer Wellness Day.

Owner and lead therapist Vernell Alexander built AVA wellness to realize a dream she first had in massage school. Today, Alexander spends her days at AVA Wellness helping people feel better. The center recently moved locations and is now inside of SWEAT fitness. The new fitness center features an Asian-themed decorative style and is dimly lit by candles and salt rock lamps. Alexander specializes in massaging away injuries caused by demanding physical activities such as playing sports, dancing, or fleeing from Cujo in nightmares. She also has extensive training in reflexology and prenatal therapy, and has developed a line of antioxidant-rich body products that deeply hydrate the skin during spa packages.
