Bread bookended bites include the Hall of Fame burger ($6.99), a half-pound of beef and overly emotional speeches, and the Philly Fanatic, topped with rib-eye steak, onions, peppers, and cheese ($7.99). Jill's Berry Walnut salad culls together fresh strawberries and raspberry vinaigrette ($6.49), and a full-rack of the Back-to-Back baby-back ribs slathers the meat-marimba in hickory barbecue sauce ($18.99). Desserts include the quadruple chocolate-mousse torte ($4.99), which satisfies sweet teeth via a quartet of cocoa elements—one for each half in a football game.
The Acorn Restaurant came to fruition in the fall of 2008 inside Red Oak Manor, a family-owned-and-operated bed and breakfast. Prior to its transformation, however, the house in which The Acorn resides was a private dwelling, built in 1880, and known locally as both the home and office of the neighborhood physician. Today, the restaurant extends as one of Red Oak's many services, plating up breakfast biscuits at 6:30 a.m. sharp and dishing out deli-style sandwiches for lunch. It also hosts frequent special events, including weddings and bimonthly chef competitions and live music.
Jasmin Bradley knew that her mother, Maria, had a longtime dream of owning her own restaurant. So, after serving in the US military for seven years, Jasmin opened Maria's Island Restaurant in her honor. In the restaurant's kitchen, Maria prepares dishes that she remembers from her childhood in the Dominican Republic: tender, meaty oxtail, rich dominican beef stew, and mofongo—a dish of garlicky mashed plantains and pork or shrimp—are a few specialties. Kitchen 1454 harvests its ingredients from local farms, dairies, and merchants. The restaurant’s effort to support its neighbors produces an ever-changing menu, one that staff members scrawl on a blackboard along with a new long-division problem every day. With each visit, diners have the chance to peruse that blackboard for something new, from salads, sandwiches, and burgers to hearty entrees, such as meatloaf and fried chicken. Kitchen 1454 doesn’t hog all of its tricks-of-the-trade, though, offering interactive cooking classes with special culinary focal points, including French and Italian recipes.
