No men, no makeup, no mirrors. It's a philosophy that?s helped members of the Curves community since 1992. Part fitness center, part community center, Curves is a women?s only club that takes a streamlined approach to health, fitness, and weight loss. Curves has teamed up with personal trainer Jillian Michaels of The Biggest Loser fame to develop full-body, 30-minute workouts that kick-start weigh loss, combining strength training, cardio, and stretching into sessions which torch fat, build strength, boosts intensity, and prevents plateaus. These workouts are enhanced further by the Curves Complete Program, available for an extra fee, which is rooted in Curves' method for effective weight loss in that it supplements efforts at the gym with personalized meal plans and weekly one-on-one meetings with a certified Curves coach.
Energy Center Fitness Club is manned by a staff of personal trainers, group instructors, lifestyle coaches, and massage therapists. Staffers keep the club open 24/7 to give members round-the-clock opportunities to lift free weights, climb aboard cardio and weight machines, and make saltwater taffy in the stretching area. The staff leads more than 20 group classes, whose curricula include boot camp, Zumba Toning, Pilates, and cycling. Owner, trainer, and lifestyle coach Shawn Bollig also discusses nutrition with guests, while the club's Thin & Healthy Total Solution offers clients a weight loss program aimed toward a balanced, healthy lifestyle.
Free towel service keeps workouts hygienic, as do the private locker and shower areas. Massage therapy soothes peaked muscles, while Energy Center Fitness Club renders clients tan in lie-down and standup UV booths. A complimentary play area, meanwhile, keeps children entertained and prevents their imaginary friends from hogging the invisible elliptical machines.
Dave Gerry started the Princeton Club with three simple tenets in mind: great trainers, exceptional equipment, and easy access. To realize that dream, he assembled a team of American College of Sports Medicine–certified personal trainers to helm the cardio and strength-training centers 24 hours a day.
Whether working out solo, in a group class, or with a trainer to remind them that bench-pressing beehives is safer with a spotter, guests can drop their young ones off at the free childcare center. Splashes fill the natatorium as swimmers paddle across the six-lane lap pool, as the resistance-current pool's adjustable waves enable guests to walk in place. A dip in the whirlpool soothes stress, and the steam room's eucalyptus aromatherapy and sauna's rejuvenating heat send bodies back into the world refreshed. Above the club, tennis and soccer players soak in vistas of Madison as they duke it out on the rooftop garden's turf. The competition continues indoors on basketball, racquetball, and volleyball courts.
The techniques that Lauren Birkel imparts to her trainers are the same ones she used on herself while preparing for and completing the rigorous Ironman World Championships in 2005 and 2011, as well as the France-held International Triathlon Union Long Course World Championships in 2007. With this history of achieving difficult goals, Birkel knows how to inspire students without commissioning a band of rabid coyotes to chase them while they run.
She and her many cotrainers use these thoroughly tested methods of motivation to push students toward healthier lives in one-on-one, small-group, and large-group training sessions. She decks out her indoor studios with all the necessary equipment for personal-training sessions and isn't afraid to lead all-outdoor boot-camp academies in the heat or rain.
When swimmers plunge into either the warm-water or lap pools at Pinnacle Health and Fitness, they might feel as if they’re relaxing in the ocean. That’s because the pool isn’t pumped with harsh chemicals—instead, the staff maintains a salt water system. And rather than restricting themselves to swim lessons and laps, the staff leads aquatic group exercise classes, aqua-based boot camps, and even personal-training sessions in the pool.
Their array of on-land fitness activities includes boot camps and group exercise classes such as kickboxing-based TurboKick, Zumba, and TRX Suspension Training.
Travis, Pinnacle Health and Fitness’s on-staff dietician, buttresses fitness routines with nutritional guidance. Personal trainers also assist patrons who want to get fit, lose weight, or focus on specific goals such as triathlon training, volleyball conditioning, and finally winning the egg-and-spoon race at the next family reunion. After workouts, members can reward themselves with a trip to the sauna or steam room, pick up a smoothie from the juice bar, or retrieve their offspring from the childcare center.
