Jazzercise is 60 minutes of cardio, strength training, and stretching that incorporates moves from hip-hop, yoga, Pilates, jazz dance, kickboxing, and resistance training with handheld weights. Dancing With the Stars multiple-champion Cheryl Burke is a big fan of Jazzercise's improvisational workouts, though luckily you won't need her dance moves to get the most out of your class. If you're prone to first-class jitters, though, you can review the basic moves online before you go. Expect to burn off up to 500 calories with each go-round.

When Fit to Dance Club hosts dance-fitness class, it carries a little extra weight. Of the three female trainers, one trained at the Royal Academy of Dance, and two danced their way to fitness through multiple pregnancies. The simple Latin-inflected dance moves of Zumba combine into cardio dance routines, whereas their Pilates sessions build long lean muscle. Their ballet aerobics classes focus on conditioning, toning, and building flexibility, rather than on performance techniques, such as quacking like a real swan for productions of Swan Lake. During Wednesday and Friday Mornings, “Play Group” offers childcare for moms while they work out; alternatively, parents can occupy their youngsters with kids’ ballet classes, which build a technical foundation and expose youngsters to the expressive power of dance.
