At first, Cakes by Paula was a solution to a personal problem. Paula Surrette wanted to personalize her son's birthday parties with custom cakes but couldn?t find a shop willing to bake truly custom designs. So she took a slew of classes, first to make cakes for her own family, then for her friends, and now for clients across Massachusetts, including Boston Red Sox great David Ortiz. During one-on-one consultations, Paula encourages clients to bring pictures, printouts, and flowers to customize their dream cake, whether it be a chocolate cake in the shape of a guitar or a lemon cake in the shape of a chocolate cake.
The scenery behind the counter at Just Desserts Bakery & Cafe can be a bit overwhelming. That's because its bakers fill the glass display cases with a full array of freshly baked sweets, from fondant-topped cupcakes to crispy cannoli. They churn out options for all hours of the day. Eclairs cater to the early crowd's need for a morning sugar rush, and cups of coffee serve the needs of those trying to stay up all night to be the first in line for those eclairs.
The centerpiece of the bakery, however, has always been its cakes and cupcakes. For special occasions, bakers shape batter and swirl frosting to create themed treats. The flavors are just as unique as the designs, with options such as Junior Mint, banana creme, and lemon. Upon request, they can even craft cakes that shun the use of sugar, gluten, or animal products.
The skill and finesse required to perform well on a miniature golf course can force one to break a sweat?which is why Magoo's Ice Cream serves up dozens of frozen treats right next to its own 18-hole outdoor course. Treats include frozen yogurt and traditional and soft-serve ice cream?in flavors such as strawberry cheesecake, custard, and pi?a colada, which can be topped with hot fudge, caramel, and peanut butter.

In your own words, how would you describe your menu?
Sweet and delicious. We offer different items throughout the year to keep things interesting.
What made you want to work with food? When did you first develop that passion?
As soon as I learned how to decorate cakes, I couldn't believe that I could make money having fun.
What is one of your most popular offerings? How is it prepared?
The cupcakes are our most popular offering. We try to put different spins on the flavor like cotton candy, Swedish fish, scorpion bowl, just to name a few.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
We're a small mom and pop shop, so we only bake what we think will sell for the day.
One of the best things about sandwiches is their versatility, with two slices of bread containing flavors that can be sweet, spicy, savory, or fresh and herby. The staff members at Wilbur’s North attempt to capture all of these profiles within a menu of handheld meals featuring Boar’s Head meats. They layer together options such as a spicy buffalo-chicken sandwich, a chili and provolone wrap, and a Thanksgiving wrap with turkey, cranberry sauce, and stuffing. They can pile fillings on a choice of bread, a freshly baked french roll, or three flavors of tortillas, which give clients the option to cut a few calories. Staffers also fill cups with soft-serve ice cream and fashion custom ice-cream cakes, ensuring memorable celebrations even in the absence of piñatas filled with fireworks.
Jenn and Donny have long accepted their elitist take on coffee. As college students and self-professed coffee snobs who both worked in the food industry, they bemoaned a lack of sophisticated brews and attentive service, finally deciding that innovation would be the best form of protest. They dreamt up their own café where the beans would be freshly micro-roasted, the cocoa would incorporate three types of chocolate, and every drink would be handmade by the same person who took your order. The resulting venue, Coffee Break Cafe, lined its menu with libations of all temperatures and caffeinated creeds.
The café's house blend hails from locales such as Sumatra, Colombia, Africa, and South America and is shipped from specialty roasters who prep the beans in small batches. Jenn and Donny's commitment to coffee quality is matched by their enthusiasm for the natural world—they stock organic and fair-trade options, as well as dairy products from a hormone-free farm. Though they stand by meticulous barista techniques, they are hardly sugar-shunning purists. They readily infuse hot and frozen drinks with dessert flavors, ranging from red velvet cupcake to cinnamon bun, crafting a far superior breakfast sweet than grapefruit pie. Bagels and pastries, delivered daily by neighborhood bakeries, balance out refreshing sips. The morning hotspot's communal spirit is reflected in hanging pictures by local artists, live music, and complimentary story readings for kids.
