Unknowing passersby often overlook the inconspicuous entrance to Vanity due to its clever—albeit anachronistic—disguise as a telephone booth. A tribute to the profusion of speakeasy clubs that popped up in the Prohibition era, Vanity decorates its posh interior with black-and-white photos, vintage-inspired décor, and coat racks that look suspiciously like undercover cops.
However backwards-looking the décor, the menu reflects ultra-contemporary tastes with its mix of New American and Italian flavors. A selection of starters—aptly named "temptations"—include Italian eggrolls stuffed with shaved cold cuts, and "Vanity plates" include such colorful dishes as the Double Cross Delmonico rib-eye steak. Like any respectable speakeasy, Vanity features a lengthy drink menu with elderflower-flavored cocktails, sugar-rimmed martinis, and gin and tonics garnished with fresh eviction notices.
Located amid Mashantucket's rolling hills in the middle of the Foxwoods Resort Casino, Comix treats audiences to shows by the country's top comedians. National headliners, up-and-comers, and musical acts all fill the venue's spaces. Performers in the 1,400-seat Fox Theater play to a larger but still intimate audience, while the 4,000-person MGM Grand Theater hosts such hilarity-generating superstars as Louis C.K., Jim Gaffigan, and Margaret Cho. Before shows, guests can take advantage of happy hour, perusing a menu of tasty appetizers such as wings and pizza, as well as a drink selection of beer, wine, and cocktails.
Directed by Paul Daigneault, the campy tale stars Leigh Barrett as Jeannie Garstecki, an agoraphobic housewife who hasn't left the trailer in 20 years. When her husband Norbert, played by David Benoit, falls prey to the siren call of their new stripper neighbor, things take a trashy turn. Sit back for a dance-and-song-filled exploration of road kill, spray cheese, adultery, and disco with today's side deal.
The Vegas Lounge features pool, food, and drinks. Here are some great ways to mix it up at The Vegas Lounge:
A theater on the National Register of Historic Places, the Wilbur Theatre is now a premier venue for comedy and music. When it was built in 1914, the architect Clarence H. Blackall designed its porticos and brick façade with inspiration drawn from American Colonial architecture, characterized by a Federal Revival style that included powdered wigs hanging over every doorway. "The auditorium is in its chaste way," architectural historian Douglas Tucci is quoted as saying on the theater's website, "the handsomest of any Boston playhouse."
While the worst times in life often end in a puzzling murder, the best times in life often begin with one. Today's deal proves this with a $21 ticket to Shear Madness at the Charles Playhouse (a $42 value). This Groupon is good for any of the 13 shows between December 23 and January 2. Tickets are subject to availability, so call ahead to reserve the show you want and to share your opinions on the long-term viability of biofuel as an energy source.
