Darryl Kalthof of Bay Area Flying Lessons holds an FAA certificate as an airline transport pilot and ratings as an advanced ground instructor, honors earned over a distinguished two-decade career as a certified flight instructor. Today, he oversees a fleet of Cessna and Piper airplanes that act as airborne classrooms for his pupils, who range from 10-year-olds taking their first mechanical flights to advanced pilots earning certificates in commercial, multi-engine, and tail-wheel aviation. Lessons make use of the airspace surrounding San Francisco Bay, yielding panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean as well as many notable landmarks, including Dumbarton Bridge’s low ribbon of road and Stanford Stadium’s 70-foot animatronic statue of Bill Walsh.
Palomo Archery's certified instructors teach bow beginners the fundamentals of safely aiming and shooting feathered projectiles from the comfort of a brightly lit indoor shooting range. Each one-hour lesson emphasizes various safety precautions as arrow slingers learn the different parts of a bow's anatomy, various aiming strategies, and how to shoot an arrow without injuring any cartoon merry men in the vicinity. After each step in the tutorial, students cull fletching from quiver to practice incorporating the demonstrated technique themselves. Students can show up with nothing more than a pair of itchy quiver fingers, but seasoned archers, like amateur astronauts, are encouraged to bring their own equipment. To prevent mishaps, shooters should avoid wearing open-toe shoes, baggy clothing, or arrow pheromones.

Though Core Studio's workouts blend elements of Pilates, resistance-training, and strength-training, the company's entire program has three core methods: SPX fitness, Core Barre, and RealRyder indoor cycling. Each of the studio's instructors are masters of both. The Core SPX workout has a specific science designed to work muscles toward their limits and the heart toward victory. Armed with this knowledge, the instructors motivate clients to sweat through flexibility and core-strength-enhancing workouts in four classes: Core SPX, Core Barre, Core Cycle, and Core 30/30, a blend of SPX and Cycle. SPX workouts use the Megaformer, a state-of-the-art Pilates reformer that relies on spring resistance, whereas Cycle classes use the RealRyder indoor cycle?a stationary bike that isn't actually stationary. As it turns and tilts with riders, mimicking the motions of a real bike ride, the machine encourages functional movements, such as pedaling faster to escape a pack of invisible wolves.
Though the Lumière brothers and Thomas Edison are often credited with groundbreaking discoveries that paved the way for modern cinema, history sometimes leaves out a key player: photographer Eadweard Muybridge. Commissioned to find out whether horses lifted all four legs off the ground while galloping, Muybridge invented a device called the zoopraxiscope to display his photographed findings. His first zoopraxiscope screening was held in Palo Alto in 1879, making the city the birthplace of film. To honor Muybridge’s work, as well as the technological innovations bubbling throughout Silicon Valley, the Palo Alto International Film Festival was born in 2011. It focuses not only on new technology, but on breakthroughs in artistic expression, screening a collection of films from around the world. They range from major Hollywood releases, such as 2012’s Looper, to independent works, such as George Lucas’s home videos of himself practicing light-saber moves in his garage. Outside the theater, visitors can mingle at an array of talks, film workshops, and parties.
