Recognized in 2008 as one of Bicycle Retailer’s Top 100 Bike Shops in the U.S., The Bike Connection serves all bipedal peddlers looking to buy, rent, or maintain a velocipede. The full tune-up unleashes professionally trained and certified mechanics upon the two-pronged mobile devices, serving up liberal brake and derailleur adjustments, truing crooked wheels, and tightening any loose bolts looking to jump ship. The technicians then free up the crankset’s angular potential with a bottom bracket adjustment, un-break brakes, and shower cranky chains with liberating lubricants. With more than 25 years of bike-tinkering experience, this fully equipped, family-owned bicycle asylum returns aging bicycles to a vigor reminiscent of their training-wheel years.

Q&A with Pete Buhl, Ceo

What makes your business stand out?

Beeline Bikes provides the ultimate convenience in bicycle service. A mobile shop with a professional, background checked mechanic that comes to the customer, fully stocked with all the parts and accessories you need for your bike (components, lights, locks, pumps, wheels, etc.). And our prices are lower than you will find in most bike shops.

What inspired you to start or run this business?

Getting bicycle service as always been difficult?getting bikes into a car and to and from the shop, being without your bike(s) for a week or more during service and having little transparency on the service actually performed. Beeline Bikes makes it easy for the family, commuter or avid cyclist. We come to the customer's location. Three easy steps: Schedule, Service, and Ride.

What is the best reaction you?ve ever gotten from a customer?

"This is amazing, I'm telling all my friends." "It's great that my whole family is riding again. The bikes had flat tires and were collecting dust. Now they ride better than when they were new."

What?s your favorite part about your job?

Seeing the amazement and happiness in a customer's eyes when they've used the Beeline Bikes service. Kid's generally say their bikes run better than new.

Over the course of 50 years, the family that runs Helm of Sun Valley has amassed an inventory of top-shelf gear for wintry recreation and summertime watersports. Before stocking their shelves, the shop's athletic staffers take skis from Alpina, kiteboards from Cabrinha, and water skis from Connelly for test spins to appraise their performance. Standout sports gear snags a spot inside the store, along with apparel and accessories. Employees also rent out and tune up equipment. They specialize in fitting snowboard boots to feet, sometimes fashioning custom ZipFit liners by molding foam around arches. New kiteboard owners can master the sport by attending lessons, during which instructors teach basics on land before waving pupils onward into frothy crests.

When crafting custom-fit bicycles, the staff members at CyclePath focus on empty space. To select the perfect frame, wheels, and components for each customer, they observe how his or her body moves through the air in free motion, rather than relying on a database of average body types. The result is a cycle that is uniquely suited to the customer's body and movements. In addition to building custom cycles, they rent out high-end road and mountain bikes and sell pre-made bicycles, allowing patrons to immediately explore the Bay Area's scenic side streets. They keep cycles running smoothly with comprehensive tune-ups and help out bikers who have accidentally pedaled into a realistic-looking mural with a list of repairs.

Like a perfectly broken-in glove or a lucky bat, RD Academy stays with ballplayers for years and years. It also plays an important role in a ballplayer's development.

When Santa Clara University head baseball coach Dan O'Brien founded the academy, he didn't design it for just one age group, but instead as a resource that players can turn to from the moment they pick up a ball to the moment they have to pick out a college. The academy's youth camps, for instance, emphasize the game's fundamentals to kids aged 7–13. When the time comes to move up to the next level, the academy organizes high school showcases, where ballplayers can impress college coaches without hurling a fastball through their bedroom window, and then immediately repairing the window.
