When young ballplayers need to diagnose weaknesses in their game, they make an appointment with The Hit Doctor. They leave with a better understanding of the game, and skills they can fall back on for the entirety of their career. Since 1989, The Hit Doctor has boosted baseball and softball players to the next level with camps, private lessons, team workouts, and video analysis. All of those offerings operate under the direction of the academy's staff of coaches, each handpicked for his or her knowledge of the game and ability to communicate it through words instead of through complicated strings of nose taps and cap tugs.

A member of the exclusive Ron Jaworski Golf Signature portfolio, Valleybrook Country Club lives up to the legendary status of its namesake with Best of South Jersey awards in 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2011, as determined by readers of the Courier-Post. The club's 18-hole course earns its accolades with tough but rewarding challenges, presenting a hybrid of flat and hilly terrain that keeps players mindful of elevation as they line up approaches or somersault down hillsides in pursuit of runaway balls. Complicating matters are tight fairways and water hazards that come into play at nine points throughout the round. While golfers deliberate over club choice, they can assuage their nerves with visions of steamed mussels, burgers, and pizzas awaiting them at Riley's Pub for post-round devouring.

Course at a Glance:

  • 18-hole, par 72 course
  • Total length of 6,384 yards from the back tees
  • Course rating of 69.6 from the back tees
  • Course slope of 123 from the back tees
  • Three sets of tees per hole

Clients learn from the best at Primal Kickboxing, specifically Carl Mascarenhas, a former World Cup gold medalist and US national kickboxing champion. During 30-minute kickboxing workouts, he whips bodies into shape using a rotating routine of kicks, jabs, and speed texting sequences.

A cross-training approach is at the heart of Primal Kickboxing's MMA strength classes, which challenge clients with kettlebells, body-weight exercises, and medicine balls. Primal's muay thai and submission wrestling classes focus on more specialized skills, but still build strong muscles.

To transform their students into one of Champions Kickboxing's titular champions, the studio's instructors teach more than just technique; they incorporate discipline, fitness, and fun into classes for students aged 3 and up. They start working with tykes at preschool age, helping them develop their listening and social-interaction skills, along with confidence to prepare them for school. The pre-martial-arts education welcomes students up to age 6, after which point, kids can enroll in the belt program and begin working toward a black belt in kenpo karate. Adults also train toward black belts in karate classes or study the advanced combat art of muay thai, which incorporates striking with the hands, feet, elbows, and knees and is also known as the "science of eight limbs."

To promote a higher level of fitness among their students, the teachers also conduct strength-and-conditioning classes, including Zumba and kickboxing. The addition of streamers, balloons, and confetti transforms the studio into a birthday haven for kids, complete with races, games of dodge ball, and a personalized birthday cake that the special boy or girl can karate-chop into pieces to serve to their friends.
