To that end, a different lineup of exercises awaits with every visit to the gym, each designed to breed a high level of General Physical Preparedness, or GPP?the same thing firefighters strive for when they practice hoisting heavy hoses and rescuing dumbbells out of trees. Class-goers might perform gymnastics stretches, pump out a set of pushups, and then complete some laps of walking lunges before hoisting a barbell over their heads one day, and then perform an entirely new set of exercises the next. Throughout the week, sneakers pound upon triple-bonded foam as students undergo high-intensity routines combining cardio, resistance-training, core-training, and flexibility exercises at Seattle Boot Camp, where trainers work to motivate others in their journeys toward improved fitness and well-being. Their approach focuses on meals made up of lean meats, vegetables, and fruits, eschewing excessive sugar, salt, and bacon-wrapped donuts deep-fried in bacon-wrapped-donut fat.
After nearly a decade spent working in the health and fitness industry, Joel Thomas wasn't content with his two master's degrees and time spent as a varsity strength and conditioning coach at both the University of Idaho and Washington State University. Joel founded his own practice under the name Out of Bounds CrossFit in 2007, which soon became a full-on CrossFit facility where Joel challenges and surprises members with an ever-changing regimen of fast-paced workouts. He uses kettlebells, medicine balls, dumbbells, and barbells that build muscle through functional movement rather than using machines that isolate individual muscle groups and weights that spit out a chocolate after every rep. Performed properly?that is, with energy and purpose?Joel's approach can increase endurance, strength, and flexibility, and improve overall body composition.
Inside Lakeside CrossFit, you won't hear any drill-sergeant screams or look-at-me demonstrations of ego. What you will hear are enthusiastic words of support and encouragement from the Level 1-certified trainers who lead classic CrossFit routines. Their aim is, of course, to produce fitness results for every person who walks in the door, from the Olympic rower to the folks new to the gym who just want to take charge of their physical fitness.?But even more than that, they want to keep people safe, which is why they closely watch form and technique while exercisers row, run, power-lift, and generally push themselves to improved overall health.

In 2005, Sili Kalepo and a friend started working out in an old warehouse; it was their solution to the complete lack of neighborhood gyms in Rainier Beach. Fortunately, the space suited their style of exercise pretty well, their programs caught on, and they started a gym. They became part of the non-profit Urban Impact, striving to promote healthier lifestyles in the community. Time treated them well, and in 2013 they relocated to a brand new facility on the ground floor of the Emerald City Commons, with their CrossFit program taking over the space next door.
These days, workouts incorporate a variety of agility, strength, and endurance training techniques. The routines can get pretty intense, but the trainers are on-hand to monitor maneuvers and ensure participants stay healthy. "We believe that all people have a threshold that is safe for their bodies to handle," says the CrossFit trainer. "All workouts can be modified to your intensity level and ability."
MKG Seattle is a fitness triple threat. First come their martial-arts classes for adults and kids, in which students learn to jump, punch, and kick in styles from muay thai and kickboxing to the Filipino art of kali. Second, an intense MAX10 bootcamp uses martial-arts-inspired moves to build stamina and strength.
Third, MKG Seattle dedicates 3,000 square feet of space to CrossFit, which co-owner Tammy Wilson originally picked up to supplement her Muay Thai training. Here, she and the other CrossFit coaches guide new and seasoned students through each daily-changing workout, adjusting weights and reps to ensure everyone is equally challenged. During any given workout of the day, students may perform functional movements like squatting with weighted barbells, swinging kettlebells, or leaping tall buildings in a single bound. The gym also offers childcare during select hours throughout the week.
