Dify Fitness’s founder and head trainer Mark Haner likes to joke around, talk, sing praises of his hometown, and above all, assist kids and adults on the journey toward long-term wellness. For more than 11 years, Mark coached local teens on high-school basketball and track teams, eventually extending his fitness expertise to adults via private-training sessions, boot camps, and instructional online fitness videos. Defying the stereotypical behaviors associated with hardhearted drill-sergeant trainers, Mark’s good-natured teaching methods include constant encouragement and nutritional support, and never yelling or laughing at a toupee knocked askew during jump-rope warm-ups.
Lex Cosmetics helps dress fingers in an ever-changing array of vibrant, cruelty-free nail polish. The online retailer's rainbow of shades spans from purples to reds with colors and titles such as Seattle Sunshine, Sassy Pants, and Toast ($10 each). Each shade in the lively lineup was submitted by a customer, voted on by brand devotees and imbued with a biographic color story that explains its inspiration. The long-lasting nail polishes eschew formaldehyde, DBP, and toluene, and forgo animal testing in favor of simply asking rabbits whether or not they'd wear each color to prom. Additionally, Lex Cosmetics donates a percentage of their profits to organizations and non-profits suggested by shoppers.
After Joan Duce and her siblings Jim and Katy Reischling attended a painting class, they soon decided they enjoyed the pastime enough to open their own studio. Five local painters?some of whom have painted their whole lives, and have taught classes elsewhere?have joined the owners of Embellished in their mission to immerse visitors in a painting class free from the formalities of other art classes, such as berets and white-tie suits. The teachers lead students equipped with aprons, acrylic paints, and brushes through a step-by-step painting process from seats at private easels. Under their guidance, students have created canvas works such as a diptych of a vintage truck, portraits of flowers and trees, and re-creations of famous paintings such as Van Gogh's Starry Night. As they paint, participants can sip red and white wines and locally brewed IPAs, and snack on hors d'oeuvres to the tune of provided music and the sounds of paint drying on canvas.
After his first time riding a Segway, 11-year-old Gregg Jantz Jr. was hooked. There weren’t Segway tours in his hometown of Edmonds, so he and his father went to the company’s headquarters in New Hampshire to learn more about the self-balancing transporters. They were excited about what they learned there, leading to the creation of Segway of Edmonds.
Today, visitors can take 90-minute tours of Puget Sound. By day, the tours take a historical angle, and educate groups about Olympic Beach and the mills that used to sit along the coast. Sunset tours create beautiful photo ops, and can be arranged to end with dinner at one of the waterfront restaurants. All tours begin with a 30-minute orientation session, and guides stop occasionally to take photos of groups and make sure no one has fused to their Segway. Visitors can also rent Segways for self-guided tours.
