Since 1998, the instructors at Salsaddiction have been infecting students of all ages with their passion for Latin dance, helming classes at numerous locations around the city, including the 4,000-square-foot Integration Pilates dance studio. Once they turn on the music, they’ll divulge salsa styles, such as the flamboyant L.A. school or the group-based, partner-swapping rueda de casino. The fiesta continues at regular social events where students can try out their moves between conversations with peers or uncooperative pairs of feet.
Channeling his 10-year career as professional hockey player, owner and head instructor Marek Babic helps players of all ages become better hockey players. At his on-ice training center, he and his instructors lead youngsters and adults in sharpening their skills through private instruction and team sessions. The dedicated coaches will customize sessions to their players' needs, focusing on skating, shooting, or dodging checks with graceful triple lutzes. They also lead intensive youth summer camps onsite or in tours across Europe.
Those seeking to improve their successful shot percentage can practice drills at the shooting range or get a peep at their technique with the center's video shot-analysis system.
Learn Photography Canada's James Lam wasn't born a photographer––it was something he fell into after beginning a career as a mechanical engineer and travelling to Australia to work as marketing director for a national charity. But once he picked up the camera and learned its ins and outs, there was no going back. He fostered his passion and travelled around the world photographing landscapes, architecture, wildlife, and people until he could photograph an apple off a man's head from 20 paces.
Today, he leads students of all levels on photographic journeys of their own throughout Calgary, Edmonton, and Vancouver. As groups wander along photogenic streets, snapping images of architecture, urban wildlife, and people, James and his fellow instructors demystify digital SLRs by explaining aperture, white balance, and ISO. The team also explores photography further, expounding on techniques such as night photography and creating panoramic photos so that patrons can study the entire interior of a bank at once before robbing it.
Guitar, drums, piano, and vocals; recording, composition, and performing; musical theater, reggae, and classical. Somehow, Justin and Megan McDonough have studied it all and still have the energy to share their passions with others as studio manager and school manager at Resonate. In addition to lessons for students as young as age three in popular instruments such as violin and guitar, Resonate’s instructors forge musicians ready to make a splash in the modern music industry with sessions in topics such as music theory, digital production, and audio engineering. The latter can be put into practice in a recording studio, where full-semester students get an hour of free time to put together a polished recording. The artists supplement musician-aimed lessons and resources with harmonic services for hire—producing ad jingles and voiceovers, composing original songs, and humming lullabies to squalling babies.
