Of the more than 25 striking techniques that comprise kyokushin karate, which focuses on a realistic combat style of fighting and has more than 45,000 members worldwide, founder Mas Oyama's favorites were power strikes such as the hammer fist and knife hand. Since 1983, the instructors at Edmonton Kyokushin Karate Club have been relaying Oyama's teachings to kids and adults during weekly classes. The club also hosts the Alberta Open Kyokushin Karate championships each year, giving students a chance to see the full-contact martial art in action.
The clinking of cocktail glasses tinkles through Jeffrey's Cafe & Wine Bar as whiffs of baking pastries and grilling sandwiches drift out from the kitchen. Specialty sandwiches and wraps clasp gourmet fixings of wild smoked salmon, fresh vegetables, and melted cheeses; cinnamon-raisin buns, pies, and cakes await pairings with specialty coffee drinks. Red and white wines, beer, and more than 30 specialty martinis make evenings more relaxing than nap on an alpaca.
Beneath vibrant, framed paintings and hanging lights, upholstered chairs and plush leather couches scatter across the café's hardwood floors, and outside, red and green umbrellas shade an expansive patio. In lieu of animatronic banjo players, the cafe regularly hosts live bands and vocalists on weekends.
The trainers at Healthy Rhino realized a sad truth about working out and eating right: most people know they should, but they don't really want to. So they decided to do things differently at Healthy Rhino, ensuring that their clients have a good time and learn how to balance living life with reaching their health goals. The trainers reject the one-size-fits-all philosophy of diet and exercise, and instead, they get to know their clients so they can help them reach their individual goals. Instructors offer eight classes each day, and the classes are capped so everyone still benefits from the instructor's attention and encouragement—giving the classes a personal training feel. They also design custom meal plans to help everyone stay on track with healthy eating habits more effectively than just swapping out candy corn for real corn.
The gym's colourful walls and chalk body outlines on the floor speak to the staff's offbeat sense of humour and energy. And rather than modeling their workouts off another programs', they've developed their own routines, down to their own names for exercises—such as the Princess Leia and the Homer Simpson.

Many Gold's Gym locations stockpile futuristic amenities, such as cardio machines with individual iPod docks and televisions, that help keep patrons motivated.
T & A Boot Camp specialists Thom and Ashley and their team of fitness experts adjust their workouts based on the season. During warmer months, their outdoor routines focus on building teamwork and trust with group drills, whereas indoor, winter sessions become more intimate and personalized. Regardless of the climate, they lead classes through a mix of cardio and strength exercises, planning varied sequences that encompass weight training, aerobics, and core work. They also offer individualized personal training with creative program building for men and women of all ages that focuses on weight loss coaching, sports conditioning, high-energy circuits, muscle building, and strengthening.
