Breckenridge Stables' herd of more than 100 steeds trots along for scenic trail rides, Western-style lessons, and historical tours of the town. As horses deftly navigate the Tenmile Range, guides point out local wildlife along the continental divide, the imaginary line drawn when Paul Bunyan and Babe the Big Blue Ox broke up. During colder months, Breckenridge Stables' custom-built mountain sleighs keep passengers snuggly during sleigh rides as a team of belgian, clydesdale, or percheron horses canters through the Colorado air.
Consistently recognized by the likes of Golf Digest and Golfweek, Lakota Canyon Ranch & Golf Club is an 18-hole championship course carved into the rolling canyon country of Western Colorado. On the front nine, players weave through majestic mountain vistas, stopping at the eighth hole to soak in views from one of the highest points on the course. The back half opens up with fairways that are decidedly flatter, thanks to the herd of wild steamrollers that barreled through town a few years ago. Throughout the course, elevated tee boxes play a key role, at times with drops of up to 100 feet to the fairway. After conquering the course, players can conquer any remaining stress by getting a massage or taking a dip in the pool at the ranch's recreation center.

Of all the events hosted at Golden based Three Tomatoes Steakhouse / Fossil Trace Golf Club, none come with as much pomp as weddings. The steakhouse— part of the Three Tomatoes Catering Companies which has been catering since 1977— kindly provides hundreds of witnesses, some of whom reach more than 1,000 feet in height. Although they can’t sign their names or raise a toast, the Rocky Mountains have stoically observed the many vows exchanged in the verdant ceremonial gardens—and the professionally-staffed parties that followed.
Three Tomatoes Steakhouse has been dishing out delicious meals since 2003 and maintains a stable of specialists who can customize menus, fill rooms with flowers and decorations, and provide day-of event assistance for everything from a business lunch to a birthday party. The combination of picturesque scenery and attentive service has earned Three Tomatoes a steady five-star rating from Wedding Wire, as well as a spot on The Knot's list of 2010's best wedding venues.
Even under less matrimonial circumstances, the steakhouse with its gorgeous views of the Rocky Mountains, aims to make any evening feel like a special event with an inviting and casual atmosphere. On days with clear skies, guests can opt for dining a la fresco and enjoy their meal on the restaurant's outdoor patio that overlooks the front range. Chefs prepare a selection of seasonal dishes, spotlighting slices of Certified Angus beef alongside chicken, seafood, and vegetarian plates. The steaks come artfully grilled or pan-seared in a variety of cuts, from tenderloins to new york strips, and derive bold flavor from sauces such as brandy cream and roasted-garlic chipotle. The steakhouse also hosts happy hour food and drink specials from 3 – 6 p.m. daily.
A rundown wooden wagon sits alone in the rough at Grand Elk Golf Club, a historic reminder of the forebears who once forged through the basin now home to the club’s 18-hole course. Though electric golf carts have since replaced Conestoga wagons as the predominant means of transportation, the site’s natural, rustic surroundings remain, treating golfers to a 360-degree panorama that showcases the Continental Divide and Rocky Mountain State Park. As players notch divots into lush fairways and putt on the soft greens with modified pool cues, they’ll follow a 7,144-yard layout drawn up by 13-time PGA Tour champion Craig Stadler and Tripp Davis. Taking inspiration from the inland courses of the British Isles, the design duo strung fairways through meadows and natural wetlands that form the headwaters of the Colorado River, all the while incorporating unique playing scenarios that challenge each golfer’s shot-making abilities.

Like farming, picnics, and attempting to climb a skyscraper with suction cups, golf outings are dependent on ideal weather conditions. Striker Golf's facility takes rain and cold out of the equation by offering golfers a chance to play in a climate-controlled compound. Within the 4,200-square-foot facility rest four expansive hitting bays for practicing long drives and a 700-square-foot putting green for fine-tuning one's short game. HD golf simulators replicate rounds on famous courses through vivid images and precise motion-tracking sensors to give players an authentic experience without having to dodge runaway golf carts.
Stretching across 6,609 yards of verdant, tree-lined grounds, Eagle Trace Golf Club offers a challenging but fair course for links-loopers of all abilities. Tickle the sweet-spot of your driver to send dimpled spheroids into the stratosphere and through the grassy midsection of the course’s kempt fairways, evading on-course impediments including five lakes, 65 sand traps, and 12 disoriented jurors known for claiming wayward orbs. With majestic, native cottonwood trees peppered against a peeper-pleasing backdrop of Rocky Mountain vistas, the par 72 course’s scenic surrounds temper more trying elements such as the slick bent-grass greens that make for hard-to-read putts and fine-print chips. An obedient golf cart is included to help duos track down slices and snap-hooks while preserving their energy for tearing divots and smashing wedges.
