Named after the legendary team from Argentina where soccer star Diego Maradona got his start, the San Diego Boca Futbol Club follows in the fleet footsteps of its titular inspiration by promoting professional and youth soccer through its involvement in the National Premier Soccer League. Herds of brightly bedecked athletes rampage across an enormous plain to earn the confidence of a whirling, chiaroscuro globe by wooing it with feats of balance and head butting. Intersperse zigs, zags, and zips with soda sips, hot-dog bites, and vuvuzela renditions of Gary Glitter B-sides. This year’s team of cleated kickers booted their way to a fourth-place ranking in the league’s western division, leaving trembling blades of glass in their wake. With recently acquired Brazilian midfielder Zé Roberto and goal-scoring leader Justin Picou leading the charge toward postseason play, fans may redeem today's Groupon for home playoff games.
In 1991, professional Swiss soccer player Ruedi Graf began World Cup Soccer Camps & Clinics as a humble operation with two small camps. Today, his team of 90 coaches interacts with about 5,000 children a year along the West Coast from Portland to San Diego. Despite their expansion, the clinics strive to maintain a 10-to-1 player-to-coach ratio in order to provide kids with individually tailored instruction. Sessions are divided by age group and skill set—U6 Fussball Academy camps introduce 5–6 year-olds to the fundamentals, the Classic Skills camp polishes basic skills and soccer concepts for 7–9 year-olds, and the Advanced Player's camp focuses on a more accelerated level of play for 10–13 year-olds.
Every summer, the sprawling fields and winding horse trails of the peaceful Walnut Grove Park undergo a transformation. The clinks and clanks of a towering stage being built permeate the soundscape, taking prominence over the usual noises of bird chirps and rustling leaves. The aromas of tender barbeque meats fill the air, and droves of music-lovers, families, and groups of friends flock to the park with their lawn chairs and beach blankets in tow. Once the crowd has arrived, top local musicians take to the stage to perform lively rock and blues songs as servers top off plastic cups with ice-cold brews. The normally serene park is now the bustling scene of the weekend-long City of San Marcos Rock, Blues & BBQ Festival, which?like the Lincoln statue?s brief sentience and subsequent leg stretch?only happens once a year.
“We believe that every child is a champion.” This mission statement informs the approach that Cal Elite Kids takes with the participants of its programs. Youngsters may learn self-reliance in gymnastics lessons, which take place on an in-ground tumble-track trampoline, on an array of beams and bars, or in the air above an in-ground foam pit. They also develop discipline in dance class; at the Rancho Santa Margarita facility, the five dance studios inspire with views of the surrounding mountains.
Cal Elite Kids’ charges can even learn how to express themselves through athletic theatrical performances or simply improve their 2 a.m. Friday-night karaoke warblings during Glee Elite sessions.
