Launched more than three decades ago, Site for Sore Eyes now operates in more than 35 showrooms throughout the Bay Area. Staffers at every location share their dedication when pairing customers with head-turning eyewear and contacts. The company offers a $25 warranty that secures all of its products, replacing broken frames for free and furnishing half-price replacements for glasses that are lost, stolen, or transformed into an acorn squash. In case eyes require prescription tweaks, each shop sits next door to California-licensed Sterling VisionCare doctors of optometry.
With locations in 13 states across America, Stanton Optical helps clients from Georgia to California achieve better vision with prescription glasses, sunglasses, and contacts. Its shelves are stocked with more than 3,000 frames and sunglasses from high-end brands, including Coach, Calvin Klein, and Armani. Full-service onsite labs help optometrists immediately craft glasses and clone monocles without the delay of sending eyewear elsewhere. Eye exams are performed by independent eye doctors conveniently located within or adjacent to Stanton Optical stores.
Skaters fly over the double-pocket bowl and full street-skate course custom-built outside Surf & Skate, and visitors inside try on apparel in themed fitting rooms with beaches, snow, and street scenes. Custom-designed countertops showcase styles reflecting from various local artists, such as urban graffiti and whimsical mosaics. Atop the counters rest skate, wake, surf, and snow gear from brands including O'Neill, Roxy, and Unit, whereas boards designed for surfing, skating, and practicing medicine line the walls alongside bikinis and snow pants.Owner Bob Mitchell opened Surf & Skate in 1981 to supply local skaters and surfers, eventually expanding his shop to supply wakeboarders and snowboarders. Team members are each skilled in at least one or two extreme sports and possess in-depth knowledge about all products. Surf & Skate also hosts events at its skate park, such as the 2010 Volcom Brand Jeans tour, which featured pro skaters, and summer-night sessions with skate shows and barbecue fare. The skate park is open for use for all skaters who have the proper equipment and sign a waiver at the store.
More than 4,000 styles of designer frames—many exclusive to the region—stand ready for visitors' perusal at Eye Designs Optometry. Styles from Fendi, bebe, Chanel, Oakley, and other well-known brands number among the vast selection of frames. Eye Designs offers more than just glasses, though. It is staffed by 10 able and experienced optometrists who perform computer-assisted eye exams and LASIK consultations, among other services.
Though he was destined to become an ophthalmologist, Dr. William Ellis didn't always have a clear vision for his career. As an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, he studied electrical engineering, focusing on field and wave transmission—lasers, in other words. It was a worthy prelude to his eventual specialty, since after completing medical school and his residency, though, Dr. Ellis realized the enormous potential of lasers—via the revolutionary new procedure known as LASIK—to help his patients see more clearly. Since then, he has performed more than 68,000 LASIK surgeries and even helped pioneer Epi-LASIK, a version of the procedure that doesn't use blades to make the incision. At his practices throughout the Bay Area, Dr. Ellis continues to take pride in performing every LASIK procedure, giving patrons the gift of clear eyesight so they can finally make out the tiny poems written between the lines of barcodes.
Dr. Gabriel Jacob heads up Royo Eye and Laser Center, a practice devoted to improving vision with modern medical treatments. He and the team here reshape nearsighted, farsighted, and 10-sided corneas with LASIK procedures and improve cataract conditions with intraocular lenses. They also offer beauty injections that stave off wrinkles around the eyes and mouth and topical solutions that promote thicker, more luscious lashes.
