Having honed his kitesurfing skills off the beaches of Hawaii and Southern California, both places known for gusty winds and big waves, Daniel Andersson knows all of the ins and outs of the sport. He draws on nearly a decade of teaching experience as the head instructor of Zen Athletics, which also specializes in functional fitness and Jeet Kune Do—Bruce Lee’s combat system. Before he even got into kitesurfing, Daniel mastered several martial arts, studying Muay Thai and Thai-boxing at a very early age in Thailand. He brings all of this athletic expertise to bear in his lessons, which are kept private or semi-private with four people or less to ensure each student gets individual attention.
San Gabriel Valley Badminton Club caters to racket-bearers with 18 badminton and five table-tennis courts. The well-lit badminton courts are housed in a large warehouse-like structure, providing players with ample room to knock the shuttlecock high into the air. SGVBC allows guests to bring as many friends as they'd like, so large groups can take turns or simultaneously increase heart rates and fool pores into opening up and letting out their sweat juices. Courts are indoors, ensuring players will be protected from bad weather and low-flying crop dusters.
Doctor of Chiropractic Dan Diep was at his wits’ end. After suffering from scoliosis, poor posture, and frequent back pain growing up, Dr. Diep thought his problems would fade anyway; but in college, picking up a heavy backpack sent shooting pains down a leg. At the suggestion of a friend, he visited a chiropractor and yielded amazing results with simple adjustments. He decided his calling in life was to become a chiropractor and help others in pain—and he hasn’t looked back.
The other chiropractors that work with Dr. Diep also understand their patients’ pain firsthand: one suffered migraines and backaches and another suffered from traumatic injuries following a car wreck before being healed by chiropractic care. They all aim to pay it forward with posture and thermal nerve scans that root out problems and low-force adjustment techniques that fix them.
In the unusual parlance of the Hunger Runs 5K, runners are “dedications,” teams are “organizations,” spectators are “assemblies,” and the race is known simply as “the hunt.” The race’s creators, the “huntmakers,” devise a series of obstacles specifically designed to encourage teamwork and camaraderie, and they set up “challenge centers” demanding expert bow-and-arrow skills, simian climbing abilities, and courage in the face of flaming objects. Organizations that finish fastest or with the most points in their designated wave earn bragging rights, awards, and cheek pinches from their proud grandmothers. Dedications are strongly encouraged to wear fun costumes and comfortable sneakers and to come bearing team spirit and the will to win.
