Mix and match 50 different species of balloon in 80 different shades of color to convey any message of your choosing.
Exhibitions and lifelike dioramas containing more than 150 vehicles sprawl across Petersen Automotive Museum's 300,000-square-foot confines, illustrating the impact of the automobile on American culture. On the first floor, permanent collections elucidate with detailed displays covering the role of the car in Los Angeles and motion picture, the history of alternative power, and the favorite engine sounds of each president. The Hot Wheels Hall of Fame parades more than 1,000 Hot Wheels vehicles, original models, and design sketches. Five galleries on the second floor shelter rotating exhibits, and the third floor's May Family Discovery Center introduces tykes to the fundamental functions of cars with interactive driving stations. Patrons wander among the extensive displays individually or join tours for groups, schools, car clubs, or families of parking cones.
Featured in dozens of publications from the Los Angeles Times to Complex, Gallery1988 hangs a colorful assortment of pop-culture-themed original artwork and prints from emerging artists on its minimalistic walls. At each of the galleries, visitors can see and purchase works by artists prior to their big breaks, avoiding the price increases and long, boring Sotheby's auctions that coincide with fame. Current gallery selections include Rezatron's 4"x5" watercolor Siskel & Q*Bert ($50), a humorous mash-up of the famous film-critic duo and the 1982 arcade game, 2Cents' series of 16"x20" screenprints ($20) inspired by popular movie icons, such as Back to the Future's Doc, filmmaker Kevin Smith, and Willy Wonka, and Billy Perkins' tribute to Blue Velvet (as seen above).
