For more than a decade, Clark Nursery's knowledgeable staff has helped homeowners to create fetching homestead panoramas through landscape and hardscape designs. With the opening of the new garden center, staff members now turn their skills to curating a collection of annuals, perennials, shrubbery, and lawn accouterments for do-it-yourself gardening. The green-thumbed staffers are on hand to dole out design advice as homeowners make their selections from an inventory that includes statuary and cast limestone planters from Haddonstone, teak furniture from Kingsley Bate, and garden gnomes from Middle-earth.

Winesett's huge plant catalog offers an excellent search system to help you pinpoint your desired fronds, ferns, and foliage before you set foot in their beautifully floral space. But those who subscribe to the Indiana Jones school of gardening can always crash in through the palms and uncover their personal horticultural holy grail by asking Winesett's helpful staff of experts to guide them to it. Starters of annuals start at $1.69, but you can also get a ready-to-inhale hanging basket of blooms beginning at $15.99. Gallon perennials are $7.99, including favorites such as Russian Sage, Ice Plant, May Night Salvia, and Purple Heart Wandering Jew. If you're looking to beautify your lawn after its outbreak of acne, buy and/or install a flowering shrub such as a mock Orange ($19.99), Spirea ($17.99), or Loropetalum ($24.99). For a High Plains feel, a drift rose ($24.99) will paint your whole house red. Winesett Nursery also carries a plethora of rare and unusual plants that tend to flourish in the Tidewater area, such as piranha plants, whomping willows, and body-snatching pods.

The best landscaping is often so good that you hardly notice its finer details—some topiaries seems to spring naturally from the grass, or flowers complement a house so nicely that they look as if they had always been there. The expert landscapers at Supreme Landscaping know how to do this deceptively difficult task. They accentuate the beauty of homes through expert garden and lawn work. They ensure grassy expanses are green and closely shaven, and that bushes grow into perfectly molded chess pieces.

Every fall, as the leaves turn orange and the air becomes crisp, owners David and Patricia Hand open up a portion of their operating farm to the general public. Aptly named the Green Hand Farm Park, the agricultural attraction features an 8-acre corn maze that challenges families, students, and office groups to work together to find their way out. The labyrinth takes on a new theme each year—such as a salute to the American soldier—and incorporates facts and clues. As maze participants interrogate corn stalks for directions, hayrides journey to a pumpkin patch and young visitors leap and bound over bales of hay. At night, campfires spring to life for cooking hot dogs and s'mores. Aside from these attractions, there is a farm market to lure visitors.
