Golfers who last played The Pines at Elizabeth City prior to 2004 may not recognize the 6,700-yard, par-72 golf course. The surrounding forests of pine trees that swaddle the fairways and greens remain, but that's about it. Course architect Tom Clark revamped everything on the course, from the new hybrid bermuda fairways to the A1/A4 bent-grass greens. Even the bunkers have been overhauled to protect against erosion, and the practice facilities now incorporate target greens, a putting green, and fairways for rehearsing real shots off the tee. The result is a course that feels brand new while rewarding the skills of precision, power, and creativity, which are each as old as the game itself.
Wind, water, and wide-open spaces?not only do they challenge players at The Golf Club at Eagle Creek, they also make the course a gratifying getaway from the hustle of the workweek. Sprawled out over 6,700 yards in the Eagle Creek community of Moyock, the course carries a links-style feel without the punishing penalties and lost balls. Lazy bermuda fairways and fast bent-grass greens guide players from the tee, tempting them with the allure of reachable birdies. But before they swing their first club, golfers can warm up at a full-length driving range and practice putting green, or visit the pro shop to have wayward balls fitted for contact lenses.
Course at a Glance: * 18-hole course * Total length of 6,700 yards from the back tees * Course rating of 72.8 from the back tees * Course slope of 135 from the back tees * Four sets of tees per hole
Virginia Beach Cornhole brings the classic challenge of chucking a corn-filled bag through a hole in a tilted game board to the seaside. Its waterfront shops stock an array of regulation-sized boards, with both painted and unfinished options, which patrons can rent or purchase. Like the bed pillows of most chickens, Virginia Beach Cornhole’s bags are packed with a pound of corn each, and are available in a rainbow of vibrant colors. For friendly competition, players can chuck bags in one of the company’s contests, hosted weekly throughout the summer and sporadically in winter months.
Weekends are reserved for relaxing?for reading a book, tending a garden, or checking the backs of wardrobes for portals into Narnia. But at Ballahack Airsoft, hundreds of urban soldiers spend their Saturdays and Sundays unwinding by unloading airsoft BBs into the chests of an enemy swarm. Here, troops patrol a field with miles of trails, woods, swamps, and clearings, decked out in camo and pointing realistic guns that fire plastic pellets. They dive behind barricades, communicate with hand signals, and strategically plan attacks, all while exchanging fire with rival teams. And if they get hit, the day isn't done. Medics can revive fallen comrades by maintaining contact for 60 seconds, or soldiers can respawn by trekking back to a predetermined point. Though it seems like organized chaos, the facility ensures the intense, fast-paced action remains as safe as can be, since all players must wear protective gear and full-seal eye protection, and be 12 years or older to participate.
