Participants then fill more than two dozen bottles with their own vintage. They can emblazon these bottles with custom-designed labels and colorful tops. Mead may be the ancestor of all fermented drink, but it's still new to many people. That's why Melovino Meadery wants to make the honey-based wine more accessible to the masses. The family-run company plans on doing just that by producing its mead with all-natural ingredients (think True Source Certified?honey) and by continuing to develop new styles, even though their repertoire will stand at more than a dozen by the end of 2014. During tours, visitors get to sample up to six different types of the centuries-old drink that Shakespeare liked to indulge in before writing about knife fights.

This is also demonstrated in its dark walls and bright paintings of pink birds and horses, and its menu that takes comfort-food classics and adds a spin of sophistication. Appetizers of truffle gnocchi with meatballs bathe in sherry-cream sauce, and the duck egg and hash is served with duck confit, peppers, and onions. A restaurant called MoonShine wouldn’t be complete without its share of housemade beverages, and double-certified sommelier and mixologist Joe San Philip delivers. His take on the manhattan combines white whiskey with Carpano Antica sweet vermouth, cherry bitters, and a cherry garnish. The Winter Moonshine Punch takes cranberry-infused Midnight Moonshine and adds cinnamon-infused rye whiskey, amaretto, pomegranate juice, and walnut bitters.
