The all-volunteer team at Sacramento Inner City Outings organizes fun and educational wilderness adventures for urban youth and adults who might not ordinarily have the opportunity to experience the natural world. Through these outdoor trips – which might include hikes, camping trips, backpacking, or snowshoeing – the organization promotes appreciation and protection of the environment, as well as personal growth and leadership skills among inner city youth. A part of the Sierra Club’s 50-city Inner City Outings network, the Sacramento chapter has organized nearly 30 outdoor trips in the last two years, and looks forward to upcoming excursions to Echo Summit and the Cosumnes River Preserve.

Ranked the No. 1 Submarine Sandwich Franchise in the 2011 Franchise 500 issue of Entrepreneur magazine, Subway has graced the globe with nutritious stacks of meat, crisp veggies, flavorful cheeses, and freshly baked breads since 1965. Three friends, relatives, or members of an understaffed barbershop quartet can wrap their paws around thick sandwiches such as the barbecue pulled pork, 12 inches of fresh-baked bread plumped to meaty perfection with 8 ounces of smoked tender pulled pork swathed in Sweet Baby Ray's Barbecue Sauce. Italian-style meatballs bob in a bath of tangy marinara sauce, bringing a soft, meaty balance to the crunch of crisp veggies in a hot meatball-marinara sandwich, and comforting melted cheese wraps its gooey arms around juicy steak and tucks it into a hot philly cheesesteak. Lettuce, tomatoes, green bell peppers, and onions reminisce about the old days back in the garden, playing kick-the-cantaloupe in the foot-long, yeasty reunion hall of a veggie-delite sub, and white-meat turkey surrounded by its roughneck trio of ham, salami, and bologna picks flavorful fistfights with ornery vegetables, tackling them to the soft, bready floor of a cold-cut combo.

The yellow and blue walls at Sol Mexican Restaurant showcase a festive collection of artistic metalwork and desert-themed sculptures, which evoke a festive, welcoming energy. Founded by the Gonzalez family, the eatery demonstrates a commitment to Mexican flavors by tempting diners with a menu of traditional, home-style cooking. In addition to making fiery salsas in-house and toasting each tortilla chip with a hyper-focused magnifying glass, the chefs show their fondness for the time-honored classics by glazing enchiladas with a complex, spicy-sweet mole sauce, slow-roasting marinated pork in a signature blend of seasonings, and stuffing tacos with everything from carnitas to carne asada.

All of the dough is made fresh daily and each pizza sports Cool River's homemade sauce accented with more than seven herbs, spices, and umlauts. Over the years, Cool River Pizza has grown from a solo outfit to a family of restaurants in California and Indiana. Inside each location, televisions illuminate dining rooms packed with long wooden tables and board games for families to play while waiting for their orders.
