Stylist Katy Flewellyn doesn't view her clients as heads of hair with people underneath. When crafting new looks for men, women, and kids, she considers the personality of the individual as well as their hair, and draws inspiration from their character to guide her forward-thinking fashion sense. This client-centric approach may be due to her naturally upbeat disposition, but it was no doubt reinforced during her training at the Paul Mitchell California Academy, a school known for its focus on customer service.
Unlike the University of Baking Chocolate Cake, Katy's alma mater is a school known for teaching a wide range of skills, and she has honed each of hers with advanced continuing education. Today, she wields a repertoire of services ranging from hair color and highlights to keratin treatment and tape-in hair extensions—all in addition to her signature designer cuts.
Tiffany Kelly has been styling hair since about the time she could hold a pair of scissors. Drawing on the lessons learned practicing her passion at schools in New York, Atlanta, and California, she manufactures structured and whimsical hairdos for her clients. Her extensive training has also enabled her to expertly execute highlights and keratin treatments. She sews extensions into existing hair for added volume and length, and twists hair into elegant up-dos for weddings and half birthday parties.
Salon owner Deborah Nava and husband Michael draw upon more than 40 years of combined of experience and wisdom gleaned from Deborah's stints with Sebastian of Beverly Hills and Allen Edwards of Newport Beach and Michael's training at the International Dior Academy to curate customized, face-flattering coifs. Though stylists customize cuts to flatter each client’s style or conceal budding antlers, the shearing team specializes in youthful hairstyles, sculpting asymmetric looks, and applying vivid highlights. Stylists also festoon strands with the latest flourishes such as keratin treatments and feather extensions. Additionally, hair gurus happily instruct clients in ways to re-create trend-savvy styles at home while furnishing tips for extending the look’s lifespan.
Founded on the idea that guests are "treated as royalty," DQ Salon, short for Drama Queen, fields a staff of stylists that crafts new hairstyles atop clients, whose reflection is already festooned with giant, iron crowns that rest above salon mirrors. Using natural and organic products and Rapunzel's self-help book, the salon’s experts trim tresses, change hues, remove unwanted stubble, and meticulously groom fingers and toes with hair and nail services.
At Attitude Hair Design Salon, their hairstyling services are more traditional?cuts, highlights, updos, corrective-coloring treatments?though they continue to add ultramodern services to their repertoire. Stylists also service male clients with camouflage-color treatments, which effortlessly blend away gray hairs in 10?15 minutes.
Of all of the services at Taglio Salon & Spa, owner and stylist Jennifer Nunez's favorite is hair coloring. "Someone can walk in with flat, ugly, torn-up hairs," she said, "and in two hours change to a completely different person. It's instant gratification." Though the color results may seem instantaneous, Jennifer's acquisition of styling skills in the beauty industry has been anything but.
She first became interested in hairstyling in high school, when she did her friends' hair. After college, Jennifer used her marketing degree to land a corporate job, then promptly quit to enroll in a salon academy. Jennifer's mentor was a platform artist for celebrity stylist Trevor Sorbie who taught her not only the fundamentals of working with hair but also the importance of education and technique. Today, at her own salon, Jennifer requires quarterly continuing-education classes for all stylists.
Even the decor at Taglio Salon & Spa took time. Jennifer and an artist designed the floor—a cloudy swirl of greens and blues—to suggest an ocean reef. As organic as the finished product may look, the process involved an airbrush, pump spray, and painstaking effort. This philosophy of performing diligent, patient work to achieve spectacular results runs through all of Taglio's services, which include applying polish to nails, exfoliating faces, or slowly eroding mountainsides by breathing heavily on them.
