Musikgarten classes elevate kinesthetic, logical, spatial, and social intelligences through musical instruction to children ages 3 months to 10 years. Each course responds to the developmental needs of a particular age group, with activities and acquired skills becoming more complex as classes ascend in age group. Family Music for Babies (ages 3–16 months) engages an adult and infant with 30–35 minutes of bouncing songs, dancing, and playing simple instruments. Curiosity curdles in amateur earthling brains and a foundation for future musical exploration is set during the Cycle of Seasons course, where children 3-1/2 to 5 years of age flirt with the foundations of rhythm and tune, coddle concentration skills, and garner the ability to self-express through sound waves. The Young Musician and Piano class, for ages 4-1/2–6 and 7–10 respectively, focus on symbolic thinking, memory, and listening acuity, and run for 55–60 minutes or until the first prodigious rock opera has been composed.
Carole Turnbo credits CrossFit’s dedication to varied, functional fitness with giving her a new lease on life. Now certified in CrossFit nutrition and as a Level 1 trainer, she shares her passion for healthy exercise as often as she can. But, while running a “Fit Club” at Schmucker Middle School and coaching a rugby team exemplify her dedication, they play second fiddle to her true calling: training students during classes at CrossFit Michiana.
The end goal in each of Carole’s sessions is competence in CrossFit’s 10 recognized fitness domains, which include cardio-respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, coordination, agility, balance, and accuracy. Students gain their ranks with the help of the Workout of the Day (WOD), an ever-changing exercise that incorporates one or more elements of the aforementioned fitness domains. During sessions, groups of students occupy CrossFit Michiana’s workout warehouse—which is more like a fitness playground—as they sweat through moves such as push-ups, pull-ups, weight lifting, and rowing. Like Santa’s collection of antique sabers, CrossFit Michiana also has equipment that can be fun but should never be used as toys, including ropes for climbing, gymnastics rings for dips, and massive tires for tire flipping.
Even before YMCAs were known worldwide as the easiest organization to spell with your arms, they were known for their original mission of fostering a sense of community through youth development, healthy living, and social-responsibility programs for people of all ages and income levels. The Michiana Family YMCA promotes wellness programs with a full-service gymnasium filled with an arsenal of modern Cybex strength machines, cardio machines, and free weights. Athletes can also stretch muscles within on-site racquetball courts, swim laps inside a 25-yard, six-lane indoor pool, and film re-creations of the 1996 Olympics on the 1/16th-mile outdoor track. The Y organizes youth programs such as summer camps and leadership opportunities and keeps younger tots occupied with childcare services.
As their name suggests, U can Paint 2 operates on the premise that anyone willing to put a brush to canvas can produce a worthwhile piece of art—and have ample fun in the process. During events open to all ages and levels of experience, participants follow along with a professional artist as they strive to produce projects that run the gamut from classical masterpieces to seasonally themed artworks. Each painting event includes all the canvases, paints, and aprons necessary to complete a piece with maximum detail and minimal garment stains. The hosts provide refreshments for their budding artists. U can Paint 2 also plans to open a new studio on South Bend Ave, where they will provide free child care during Friday and Saturday night events.
Growing up in his mother's kitchen in Western France, Laurent Robic developed a natural enthusiasm for fresh food made tenderly from scratch. After attending culinary school, Robic minced and sautéed his way across Europe, picking up knowledge of different cuisines and broadening his foreign whisk collection. Eventually, Chef Laurent traveled to the states with his wife. Today, he's amassed over 20 years of professional experience, which he passes on to students of all ages and experience levels during an ever-rotating lineup of demonstrative and hands-on cooking classes. Whether he’s passing on the secrets of winter soups and stews, demonstrating the versatility of chicken’s many kitchen uses, or unlocking global tastes with country-themed courses, Chef Laurent honors his art with patient, friendly instruction. A noted chocolatier, he also lovingly crafts French-style truffles out of Ecuadorian chocolate certified by the Rainforest Alliance.
