One practitioner of CrossFit summed up the lifestyle with one simple perspective: "People walk through the door and say, 'Hey, where's all the machines?' We're the machines." Everybody motivates everybody else in these group exercises, which strip away the fancy devices and fads of the moment to focus on natural movements. At CrossFit Playground, exercisers build muscle by climbing ropes, jogging backward, lifting heavy weights, and doing battle with their shadow-selves. The workout is different every day, and the instructor takes care to exactly explain the exercise du jour. Combining community, expertise, and old-fashioned hard work, CrossFit delivers proven results.
Anytime Fitness, which boasts more than 1,800 clubs in North America, makes it easier for average folks to etch out time for exercise by doing one simple thing: staying open 24 hours a day for 365 days a year. As fitness seekers challenge themselves on state-of-the-art cardio machines and top-of-the-line strength equipment in clean, well-stocked facilities, security monitoring ensures they?re safe and producing enough sweat to meet official government standards. Members can also ramp up their exercise regimens with the help of Anytime Fitness?s staff of personal trainers, who demonstrate moves and sling motivating tips. After workouts, guests can shower in the private restrooms or hop into one of the tanning booths available 24 hours a day.
At CrossFit West Hartford, knowledgeable coaches draw from trainings and disciplines such as MMA fighting and college football to get their students fit and healthy. Fitness trainer Paul Dexter knows that actions speak louder than words. That’s why the former Bally’s Total Fitness director became nationally ranked as a natural bodybuilder, proving he had the goods to transform his body and the bodies of others. To give his clients a more personal experience, Paul left Bally’s and teamed up with his wife Laura to open Dexter Training Concepts.
Along with a team of certified trainers, Paul and Laura lead personal-training sessions that approach fitness using a three-pronged philosophy: strength training, cardio exercise, and nutrition. They put these fitness pillars into practice inside a 5,000-square-foot gym, which holds training sessions as well as yoga, Pilates, cardio-kickboxing, boot-camp, and aerobics classes. Free weights and machines occupy most of the gym floor, a juice bar fuels athletes in between sessions, and an onsite licensed massage therapist soothes aching muscles with practiced strokes and whispered sweet nothings.
Cardio combat focuses on torching calories and shedding fat with its fast-paced regime of kickboxing and combat moves. Poundfit classes combine interval trainging and low-impact cardio exercises with weighted neon-green drumsticks to burn calories. Women-only self-defense classes equip ladies with techniques to stop an assailant during an attack or masterfully exit an uncomfortable conversation with an in-law. ZENergy also provides less intense options for new clients.
