  • Get Real Belgian Festival
Barbecue ribs with a smoky rauchbier. A melon salad with a dark doppelbock. The folks behind Get Real Presents specialize in pairings like these, sharing the joys of craft beer and delicious, locally-sourced foods. In this spirit, its team of foodies and beer aficionados hosts festivals featuring more than 80 brews, as well as restaurant events that pair craft beer with regional foods. As unique as it sounds, they admit this isn't exactly a new idea—they take a page from other countries, such as Belgium, who actually anchor much of their cuisine around the effervescent beverage. Following this "cuisine a la biere" model, they aim to highlight all of the great things a freshly crafted brew can do to enhance an evening out on the town, such as highlighting the flavors of a complementary dish, spicing up a local chef's stew, or softening your dad to the idea of paying off all of your student loans.

  • Jamaican Jerk Festival
Every summer the Jamaican Jerk Festival creates an authentic slice of Jamaica within the continental United States, with appearances by Christopher Martin, Shaggy & Fab 5. Reggae music plays, and the aromas of jerk chicken, pork, and fish dance in the warm air. Aptly named the Jamaican Jerk Festival, the celebration brings together food vendors, home cooks, and renowned chefs—who demonstrate how to make traditional Jamaican recipes. Multiple stages serve up entertainment alongside this cuisine. International musicians play classic and modern music, and performance artists keep the art of Jamaican storytelling alive. Meanwhile, cooking competitions and dominoes tournaments invite attendees to become active participants in the celebration.

  • International Great Beer Expo
The annual International Great Beer Expo assembles more than 50 breweries from around the world at Long Island's Belmont Park Racetrack. Every attendee through the gates gets a 5-ounce souvenir tasting glass, which they can fill and refill with 2-ounce samples from any exhibiting brewery. Beers truly hail from all corners of the world, including Lebanon, Indonesia, Nicaragua, and New Zealand, in addition to places famed for their brews such as Ireland, Belgium, and Germany. But the event isn't all fun and games of bags; a portion of the proceeds benefits the Beer for Brains Foundation, which brings craft-beer lovers together to help find a cure for brain cancer.

  • Rockaway Beach
The Great Urban Race is a one-day event pitting teams of two against one another in a race combining physical challenges, scavenger hunts, and puzzles. Up to 700 twosomes will traverse 4 to 8 miles of Toronto terrain on foot and by public transportation as they solve 12 challenging clues in a fun quest to reach the finish line first. Sample clues and challenges from past Great Urban Races include charades, bubble-gum chewing, pig Latin deciphering, bicycle races, and word scrambles, making this race ideal for competitive eaters and cryptographers alike. Teams are encouraged to dress up in matching outfits, and prizes will be awarded for best costume. Prizes are also given for race results, with $300 going to first place, $200 to second place, and $100 to third place. The top 25 teams will qualify for the National Championship in New Orleans in November, with the top three teams receiving free entry. Each participant gets a T-shirt and postrace refreshments of fruit, granola bars, and a run through a Perrier sprinkler. Read over the rules and FAQs for more information.
