Kevin Allen earned his personal training certification in 1989, but he didn’t stop there. Instead, he layered more expertise and experience onto his resume with every passing year, finally founding Namaste Personal Training to share his wealth of fitness knowledge with as many clients as possible. Now the gym has been named Oakland magazine's best gym in the East Bay in 2012 and 2013, a title Allen and his team of four trainers uphold by addressing patrons’ individual fitness goals in one-on-one personal training sessions, or obliterating bucket loads of calories in group fitness classes. They also tailor introductory fitness courses exclusively to beginners, lowering class size, shortening duration, and eliminating exercises that involve flaming jump ropes.
The word "moodology" isn't in the dictionary. Nonetheless, the term, coined by photographer Curtis Jermany, best encapsulates his work, which he describes as "the practice of photographically capturing your many moods." To achieve this, Curtis casts his portraiture subjects in heavy shadow, dramatically emphasizing the sheen of sweat on a young boxer or the fretboard of a talented musician's guitar. While Curtis mans the camera, his team of makeup artists and stylists helps ensure that every pose-striker feels comfortable and confident.
Available for commercial and private work both in the studio and on-location, Curtis's clients range from fashion models to families, kids, and high school seniors. Besides snapping his own photos, Curtis teaches classes that help amateur shutterbugs avoid rookie mistakes such as filling entire rolls of film with close-up pictures of your eye.
Gil Stancourt says he'll put a light bulb in anything. Take one look around his studio and you'll believe him. The born tinkerer, who built his first lamp at the age of 12, has spent the last quarter century restoring antique lamps and designing original lighting fixtures, and in that time he's custom-made crystal fixtures, reproductions of cathedral chandeliers, and even art objects from repurposed items. Gil's specialty is bringing back to life antique lamps, which he can convert into more eco-friendly fixtures by retrofitting them to use energy-efficient GU-24 compact fluorescent bulbs and to not shine directly in the eyes of an endangered species that's trying to get some rest.
The lighting master shares his expertise in instructional classes, during which students learn basic wiring techniques and proper tool usage by constructing their own lamp from a wine bottle and other materials.
The Magic Laundry's wall-to-wall washers and dryers transform sullied attire into squeaky-clean apparel via a thorough laundering. Opt for free pickup and delivery and a clothing wizard will arrive at your doorstep to whisk away garments to be washed, dried, and folded. Patrons have a choice of detergent, softener, and dryer sheets, with hypoallergenic options available, and first-time clients receive a free laundry bag to hold unsightly threads. After clothing is cleaner than a newborn's criminal record, a laundry connoisseur can email or call to set up a delivery time, or clients may pick up the clothes themselves. If customers prefer to drop off their laundry, they can feel free to stick around while garments are made spick-and-span, passing the time by surfing free WiFi, watching rotating washers, or counting floor tiles.
