Since 1939, three generations of the Grim family have nurtured stalks of wheat, corn, and oats, and raised more than 3,000 chickens, on their picturesque farm. Now operating 10 greenhouses, each fall, they open up the premises to the public for activities including hayrides and a pick-your-own apple orchard, where guests can choose from varieties ranging from honey crisp to autumn galas.
During the farm’s Fall Festival, which runs from September 8th to November 4th, the grounds buzz with additional delights. Visitors can wend their way through a 6-acre corn maze during the daylight hours, or bring flashlights at night for an authentic taste of farming before the sun was invented. Alternatively, they can select their favorite gourd from the thousands that populate the pumpkin patch, or sample homemade apple cider donuts, apple cider slushies, or pumpkin ice cream.
With wholesome, home-spun dishes prepared daily, Tabora Farm and Orchard cultivates a back-to-basics feel that extends beyond its 19th-century barn confines. Start the day with a sweet, delicate pastry, such as a pinwheel or a turnover ($1.29 each), still less indulgent than being spoon-fed oatmeal by a corgi butler. Pies come in 13 flavors, enveloping raspberries, blackberries, cherries, and strawberries inside doughy first-class packages ($11.99 each). Remind spoons to be patient when stocking freezers with homemade ice cream in classic and palate-bending palate flavors such as lavender, chocolate maple bacon, and rosemary lemon thyme ($2.99 for a scoop, $4.99 for a pint). Commune with your food source via an extensive schedule of U-pick options, including green beans, blueberries, cucumbers, apples, and more. Lunchtime browsers can avail themselves of farm-fresh meat roasted on-site and crowned with fresh bread, lettuce, and tomatoes in sandwich form ($6.50+), and Fresh-made mac 'n' cheese, pickles, and salads can round out or give self-improvement tips to any meal.
Winding Brook Farm is austere even by the standards of farm time, a 208-acre Bucks County plot that has been farmed by four generations for more than 100 years. The farming is still in full swing, with 100 head of dairy cows milked twice a day and 600 acres worth of crops planted and harvested each year. The good earth gives rise to a bevy of produce, including corn, soybeans, and rye. Educational groups drop by to learn about the way of life, milking cows for themselves and learning about the seeds.
Though the farm is operational year-round, fall is when it is at its most active. Corn mazes send pictographic messages into the stratosphere, displaying stalk-carvings of cows and tractors for the benefit of travelers overhead. Come Halloween, the fields become infested with skeletons and madmen out to spook hay wagon riders.
