Owner and black-belt Donna Middendorf of Sumner Taekwondo Academy leads a team of instructors who share their expertise in Korean hand-to-hand combat with kids and adults. And while the classes spend time with the more martial aspects of the art, they're really not about fighting. For Donna and the team, Taekwondo promotes peace through learning self-respect and gaining confidence—it's the heart of the discipline. At the same time, the instructors help students hone their punching and kicking skills and they engage with their peers in safe, supervised sparring sessions and fully-padded staring contests.
Lake Wilderness Golf Course is cleaved through tunnels of towering fir trees between Wilderness Lake and Lake Lucerne. Challenge land, sea, and foot-powered legs to the all-female Five Mile Lake Women's Triathlon. The hustling commences by storming the mineral Five Mile Lake for a quarter-mile swim before replacing floaties with inflatable bike helmets during the two-loop, 14-mile cycling ride along the suburban bike path. Finish up with a 3.1-mile trek along a portion of the cycling route and lake as bipedal limbs take center stage to show off built-in toe traction. Every finisher will be bestowed with a medal followed by a smorgasbord of competition perks, including a 4"x6" sponsor snapshot of you participating in the race or devouring the post-race refreshments.
Riverbend Golf Complex is a multifaceted training facility that fosters golf-game improvement from tee to green. Golfers hunt birdies and pars across the complex's 18-hole, 6,701-yard course or hone their approach technique with a round at the par-3 course, ideal for those seeking their first hole-in-one or still potty-training their pitching wedge. A 32-stall covered, lighted, and heated driving range helps golfers add new weapons to their on-course arsenal as they take aim at eight target greens spread out in the distance, and a five-member instructional staff of PGA and LPGA pros and apprentices offers a variety of lesson types to keep swings on track. For a more casual session, guests can putt through the tree-lined greens of Riverbend's 18-hole miniature-golf course. The complex also boasts a discount golf store where guests can replace golf clubs they broke while trying to pole-vault across a creek, with equipment from Adams, Bridgestone, Callaway, and other top brands.
For eight exciting weeks this autumn, children will flock to the fields of Marymoor Park to score some new skills and friendships, with all instruction designed and led by Seattle-native and USSF-certified Jacob Haney. In addition to providing a steady stream of professional instruction and individualized attention, i9 Sports works hard to maintain a positive, supportive environment that forbids negative language from both participating children and adult onlookers, and gives each player equal playing time. Over the course of the eight-week league, children will maneuver themselves through a throng of drills and exercises, sharpening both technical and teamwork techniques. Seasoned firefighter David Pelham and his team of fellow CrossFit Level 1–certified coaches make sure of that. During their daily CrossFit workouts, they push exercisers through a series of pull-ups, squats, pushups, and other functional exercises.
