To call The Body Shop a mere skin and body care store is to miss half of what makes it special. Late founder Dame Anita Roddick was a pioneer for ethical business practices; upon opening her first store in Brighton, England, in 1976, she developed company values such as "Defend Human Rights" and "Protect The Planet." She somehow balanced principles and profit, partnering in global campaigns with UNICEF, Greenpeace, Amnesty International, and the United Nations, all while ultimately expanding her brand into 2,500 locations in over 60 international markets. After her death in 2007, then-British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said, ?She campaigned for green issues for many years before it became fashionable to do so and inspired millions to the cause by bringing sustainable products to a mass market. . . . She was an inspiration.?

Indeed, the Body Shop exhibits an eco-friendliness and social consciousness that's hard to come by in a company of its size. Its products have been fair-trade since 1987, and its Against Animal Testing movement led to an EU-wide ban of animal testing of cosmetics. The products are made from ingredients harvested from around the world: shea butter from Ghana goes into body scrubs and butters, and Indian artisans craft wooden massagers and tote bags that are screenprinted by hand. But all that isn't to say the company's production practices overshadow its final products. Skincare treatments such as the brand?s iconic body butters, facial products, and gift collections often appear in Allure, Marie Claire, Lucky, Seventeen and other national publications.

The 18-hole Reidy Creek Golf Course covers 2,582 yards in the rugged hills of Escondido, supplying guests with a scenic backdrop for club-based revelry. The rolling terrain of the par 54 course—intertwined with manmade obstacles such as sculpted bunkers, sinuous lakes, and wind—challenges golfers as they attempt holes-in-one. The distinctive course, designed by the notable engineers at Cal Olson Golf Architecture not to contain any two identical holes, contains a golf shop, café, and golf clinics taught by PGA professionals. ______________ Operating out of five courses throughout the greater San Diego area, JC Golf's Intro2Golf program fosters pin-hunting prowess with a shrewd blend of hands-on instruction, individual practice, and on-course experience designed to introduce the basics of golf to beginners. During the pressure-free sessions, JC Golf equips pupils with all the necessary equipment, saving neophytes the hassle of rustling up their own sets of clubs or graphite shaft bananas. Three additional buckets of range balls grant golfers the spherical tools necessary to implant newly learned concepts into muscle memory. The package also allows clubbers to loop the links at their chosen course twice after 4 p.m. for an additional $10 per round, allowing them to test their mettle amid the brambly hazards and sand-trap curmudgeons found on every real course.

Rather than staffing a huge team of unfamiliar faces, Tiger Lily Day Spa & Boutique owner Vanessa Huff strives to cultivate an intimate environment by working directly with each client. She focuses on using clients' time wisely as she flaunts her specialty services, which include lash tinting and perming, chemical peels, PCA Skin facials, and SunFX spray tanning. Vanessa's eight years of experience with Brazilian waxing ensures that unwanted hairs are evicted artfully after she anoints skin with Satin Smooth cream wax or Cirepil hard wax. To amp up the luxury, Vanessa works closely with Alana Rose, a nationally licensed and locally certified massage therapist who specializes in Swedish and deep-tissue techniques. Tiger Lily also hosts parties to let groups of five or more spend an evening purifying pores with peels and facials or comforting friends recently dumped by the sun with UV-free spray tans.

Before yoga was a household activity and people meditated to guard their minds from computers' thought-control beams, Yoga Center of California was already teaching students a rigidly traditional yet relaxed approach to yoga. Within the center—established more than four decades ago—instructors who have all trained for at least five years under internationally renowned guru Ramakrishna Ananda demonstrate time-honored poses and emphasize meditation techniques from each yogic style to help students find the technique that suits them best. These professors of flexibility also guard pupils against strain as they find each group's comfort zone, showing them how to relax a pose and modify positions to match skill levels. In each class, such as Hatha, Chinese, or prenatal yoga, two instructors introduce the philosophy of yoga while training participants in asanas and meditation. Yoga Center of California also teaches children in specialized classes.

Situated along the meandering Moosa Creek, the fairways of Castle Creek Country Club sweep gracefully through the foothills of Temecula Wine Country and located near three major casinos. The 1948 Jack Daray blueprint escorts players through a 6,688-yard labyrinth, hemmed in by oak-forest barriers and mottled with bunkers of white sand. After completing a testy front nine that includes the 624-yard par 5 sixth hole, players embark on the most difficult stretch of the course in holes 10, 11, and 12. These holes?a 450-yard par 4 followed by back-to-back par 5s?demand that players demonstrate an ability to hit the ball far, leaving many contestants exhausted, bleary-eyed, and swinging at golf balls that don?t exist.

Course at a Glance: * 18-hole, par 72 course * Total length of 6,638 yards from the back tees * Course rating of 72 from the back tees * Course slope of 134 from the back tees * Five sets of tees per hole * Scorecard
