Downtown Athletic Club has towered over downtown Eugene since 1985, its three historic buildings housing more than 100,000 square feet of fitness amenities and community services. Corridors open into stretches of sports courts—including basketball, handball, and racquetball—and forests of cardio and strength-training equipment. In private studios, certified instructors lead a variety of fitness classes, such as yoga, martial arts, and personal training. Meanwhile, in an onsite lap pool, coaches oversee swim lessons and aquatic aerobics, and host adult swim teams.
In addition to fitness services, the center strives to create a communal relationship among its members with its abundance of social services. Childcare professionals conduct an interactive and educational state-certified preschool, along with a wide range of themed summer camps. Throughout the week, the center holds special events for its adult members, from book clubs to wine and beer tasting at its onsite, rooftop restaurant The Ax Billy Grill. Every Saturday night, the grill invites guests to carouse to live music while sampling selections from its menu of wine, beer, and American grill-style fare. For high-brow affairs, the center's expansive banquet facilities open up for weddings, private parties, and members-only games of freeze tag.
Led by founder Sandy Adler, certified Anusara instructor, Freedom Yoga's instructors lead classes throughout the week for both beginners and more advanced students. Instructors tap into their experience, skill, and dedication to help students develop a safe and meaningful yoga practice, searching within themselves and their pupils to align spiritual centers, increase strength, and boost flexibility. Rather than using intense exercises or giant marionette strings to affect the mind and body from the outside, Anusara's poses originate from within the body, using deliberate breath and movement as a form of meditation to hone the mind while helping the body increase its strength and balance.
As part of the national network of CrossFit gyms, Track Town CrossFit builds a community of athletes that approach fitness not just as exercise, but also as sport. All new members begin with a skills evaluation, during which a Track Town trainer familiarizes them with the equipment used and types of exercises commonly seen in the WOD—Workout of the Day. Though constantly changing, the WODs always blend functional movements such as sprinting, carrying heavy weight, jumping, and pull-ups. After the evaluation, the trainer will determine whether members are ready to go straight into WOD classes or start with the fundamentals course—12 sessions in one month that prep less experienced participants for the exercises used in WODs.
Between classes, students pop in for open gyms, where trainers are on standby to help them strengthen weak spots in their workout or improve technique. Each member also receives a Whole 9 nutrition guide, which augments results with meal plans based on eating whole and natural foods, or in a pinch, a poster of the food pyramid.
After suffering from a back injury, former dancer and athletic fitness guru Elise Moore discovered Pilates during her rehabilitation. Her love for the exercise form continued to flourish even after she felt better, inspiring her to open her own studio where she could put her Pilates certification and 20-plus years in the fitness industry to good use leading group mat and reformer classes.
Great Grand Master Lee is a former U.S. Olympic trial tae kwon do judge and trainer. He's also spent time as a Korean Secret Service agent and a hand-to-hand-combat instructor in the Korean army. Armed with five decades of experience, Master Lee teaches classes for all types of students with all types of goals. Whether it's an Olympic-style tournament class or a fitness-focused lesson, Master Lee's curricula blend mental positivity and with self-discipline and perseverance. Children, senior citizens, and people of all ages in between are welcome on the mat.
Drawing from three different health and fitness certifications and a degree in movement science, Susan B. Stack guides small-group classes in Pilates workouts and aerobic hoop-dance classes. One-hour Pilates classes build up sturdy cores with a holistic take on exercise that combines concentrated breathing and flowing motion. Gentle workouts protect the body by maintaining a neutral alignment of the spine while engaging the abdomen to sculpt stomachs into Michelangelo's David. Clients shatter beads of sweat due to cardio-respiratory exertion in hula-hoop-dancing classes that improve balance, coordination, and motor skills. The simple motion of twirling a plastic ring around the waist builds muscles in the entire body and can transport students back in time to their childhood without the risk of wedgies or changing the future. Group dance classes are typically held at Celebration Belly Dance & Yoga Studio, and Stack limits classes to about eight to ten students to make sure each participant gets individual instruction.
