Bread Winners

A name like Bread Winners likely conjures up images of fresh loaves of whole grain, cinnamon raisin, and banana nut bread. But bread isn't all this bakery whips up from scratch every day. On any given visit, guests are likely to find blackberry streusel or double chocolate muffins, key lime or peanut butter crunch bars, and other fresh-from-the oven treats like cream cheese rolls, apple streusel coffee cake, and individual caramel cinnamon raisin bread puddings. And that's just the beginning. In fact, Bread Winners serves a full menu of American comfort food morning, noon, and night—but it’s best known for its brunch which landed on Culture Map Dallas’s top 10. Bread Winners has four locations around Dallas, but the original Uptown location conveniently lives right next to sister business, The Quarter Bar. So start early with a mimosa or Bloody Mary alongside bananas foster waffles, an egg scramble, or a fresh fruit Danish, and then head next door after hours on a full stomach. Or reverse the order, and head to the bakery after a few rounds, where the list of more than 100 types of cakes, cheesecakes, cookie bars, and brownies awaits to soak up alcohol more readily than a heartbroken paper towel.

A flat-screen TV casts its photons upon leather couches that would make clouds jealous with their fluffiness. A coffee table anchors the spot, and it's only a small corner of the bar and grill. Beyond this bastion of basement-like coziness, Sharky's Bar & Grill houses more high-definition big screens, nine pool tables just waiting for the next bold belly flop, and those two other classic crowd-pleasers: food and drink. The kitchen staff prepares pub fare such as burgers, brats, and pizza. They also serve frosty beverages on the brand-new patio or invite guests to play bar games such as darts, NTN trivia, poker, and shuffleboard. Professional hockey-, football-, baseball-, and soccer-watching parties occupy Sharky's busy events calendar nearly every weekday, while weekly karaoke and pool nights let patrons show off their singing skills or well-honed eye-hand coordination.

Some people like a cold beer or a mixed drink with dinner, but the regulars at Rack Daddy's prefer their dinner with a side of smooth baize. They send pool balls careening across tables' upholstered surfaces, facing off in games of pool and billiards. Xena Pizza, located next door, supplies Seattle-style slices layered with toppings such as Canadian bacon and spicy Italian sausage. Patrons can stay until 2:00 a.m., at which time all of the cue balls turn into pumpkins.

Strikz Entertainment features everything groups need to entertain themselves, keeping the party alive until midnight or later with bowling, billiards, complete food menu, arcade games, and a full bar. The center boasts 20 standard bowling lanes with computerized scoring and automatic bumpers along with meeting space for large group events. Twelve more lanes wait in the Rose Room, a boutique bowling lounge with a 23-foot projection screen, high-definition televisions, and cozy couches for people to sit in between frames. Upbeat music in the laser-tag arena gets pulses racing while casual gladiators prowl throughout the area's fog-filled corridors and blacklit wine cellars. In between matches, Strikz Entertainment refuels patrons with hearty servings of hamburgers, finger foods, and cocktails. Servers also drift throughout the space, providing lane-side service to guests and encouraging them to purchase United States savings bonds.

A zapping haven with historical awareness, the Shenaniganz laser tag arena pits up to 24 players against one another in the gloomy haze and vibrant lighting of a 12th-century Cambodian temple. Players can repurpose ancient temple ruins as opaque bunkers and unload some light on unsuspecting opponents. Safe and well maintained, the laser tag arena warms up trigger fingers for joysticked, button-mashing mayhem in the 7,000-square-foot arcade. Stocked with more than 100 games, the arcade zone is a sanctuary for prize-seeking ticket hoarders and friendly competitors alike. With $35 worth of credits, players might be able to swap jackpots for prizes ranging from candy to a life-sized portrait of Macaulay Culkin. While children go wild in the arcade, parents can relax at the on-site sports bar, with more than 40 flat-screen TVs and two 25-foot hi-definition movie screens. Shenaniganz also has a restaurant and state-of-the-art bowling center. No reservations are required for laser tag, though players can always phone ahead to ensure there's no private party or toddler rave occupying the arena.
