The Studio's team of dedicated Pilates and yoga instructors promote health and wellness by guiding students through 25 dynamic exercise classes per week. The studio’s robust schedule boasts lessons in four varieties, accommodating a range of skill levels from experienced to novice. In introductory mat classes, budding fitness buffs learn the 10 basic Pilates principles designed to build a strong foundation for future workouts. All of the beginner-friendly classes emphasize proper alignment and mindful breathing techniques during a series of standing postures and hip and shoulder openers, leaving challenging inversions, arm balances, and sun salutations to the sticky mat ninjas populating intermediate sweat sessions. Students can try equipment-based Pilates classes and utilize a system of ropes and pulleys to add more resistance to core-strengthening moves and help increase limbs' range of motion. They can also head to morning Pilates mat classes for an early-light fitness buzz, where they work toward building long, lean muscles capable of reciprocating bear hugs from an actual bear.
In 1898—the same year Marie and Pierre Curie discovered radium and composer George Gershwin was born—the Wyman Center opened its doors. Founded in St. Louis by a group of citizens intent upon granting the city’s children a respite from the often sweltering tenements, the organization’s first programs were designed to furnish participants with fresh air, healthy food, and fun-filled outdoor activities. Though the world has changed radically since the Wyman Center’s inception, it continues to uphold and expand upon its founders' original mission of providing teens from disadvantaged circumstances with opportunities, support, and educational programs.
Today, powered by a dedicated staff of community leaders and volunteers, the Wyman Center’s numerous initiatives revolve around leadership and outreach programs. Amidst 250 acres of sylvan land, the Eureka campus serves as a base for outdoor education programs available to a variety of organizations from educational camps to team building retreats. Under the watchful eyes of supportive staffers and any fruit bats flying overhead, outdoor adventurers can tackle challenges afforded by ziplines, climbing walls, and orienteering activities. Along with skill-building programs, a variety of getaway packages invite groups to revel in the alfresco amenities of the Eureka campus while celebrating birthdays, weddings, or family reunions.
Crescent Farms Golf Club (formerly The Players Club at St. Louis) challenges golfers with 27 semi-private holes that have lengthened fairways and newly reconstructed greens. The scenic 18-hole course at Crescent Farms stretches just more than 7,000 yards from the back tees (the course has five sets of tees to accommodate players of varying skill levels), and the newly-lengthened Zoysia grass fairways gently slope through majestic trees and lakes and creeks filled with floating basketball hoops. Water comes into play on 14 of the 18 holes, including the signature 8th hole—a challenging 163-yard par 3 that requires golfers to avoid a lake in order to land on a two-tiered bent grass green surrounded by trees and three sand bunkers. Warm up before the round with two buckets of range balls and by microwaving your golf shoes.
A posse of tooth clinicians staffs multiple area locations, all under the direction of Dr. Michael Heiland, named one of St. Louis Magazine's top dentists for three years in a row. The doctor and his dental hygienists perform preventative, cosmetic, and pediatric services ranging from traditional exams and x-rays to advanced teeth-whitening procedures. The team also upholds its mission statement by keeping patients informed, outfitting them with all the facts they need to maintain smiles and coveted high school titles, such as "Most Likely to Be Famous as Long as He or She Maintains Clean Teeth."
The therapists at Well Kneaded Massage recognize the importance of a balanced mind, body, and spirit, which is why they have devoted themselves to massage therapies, energy work, and healing touch treatments. They specialize in nine different types of massage, including Swedish, hot stone, deep- issue, and chakra balancing, during which a therapist combines the properties of deep-tissue massage, foot reflexology, and subtle energy work. They also offer additional harmonizing treatments, including beeswax ear candling and reflexology for the hands, feet, and ears.
Heartland Dental Care's member practices pursue a patient-centric approach to keeping teeth blinding-white and bite-ready. Start off treatment with an initial exam to check teeth, gums, and cheeks for general health. Zoom! whitening, available at select locations, applies a gel and gentle light to teeth to break up stains and discoloration. The gel is applied in three 15-minute sessions, allowing recipients time to doze, read a magazine, or solve a Rubik’s cube in their head. Other brands, available at all sites, laugh in the face of wimpy whitening toothpastes as they employ a safe, effective laser to wipe away dental stains and produce dazzling smiles. Superb for news anchors and Cheshire Cat impersonators, rebuffed teeth provide everything a mouth needs to preserve its reputation of being the most reflective place for sunbeams.
