In 1998, School of Rock's first location was built in Philadelphia to strengthen students' self-confidence, develop their musicianship, and most importantly, spark an insatiable enthusiasm to learn. Today, the School of Rock franchise has branched out to more than 65 locations throughout the United States and Mexico. During the school's music lessons, encouraging instructors well versed in methods of rocking and rolling—such as strumming guitars, tickling keyboards, and causing avalanches with yodels—demystify music theory for mini Mick Jaggers of all skill levels.
School of Rock's Rock 101 program acquaints beginners with the instrument of their choice using a curriculum of weekly private lessons and group band rehearsals. Virtuosos ready to hit the stage can participate in the performance program, which prepares students for live performances that pay homage to beloved rock icons such as Queen, Led Zeppelin, and Mount Rushmore.

Originating in 1952 under the name Mel Bay Music, City Music & Education Center continues its founder's pursuit of supplying students with musical instruments, education, and resources. Alongside band and orchestra instruments available for rent or purchase, the harmonious retailer stocks its shelves with sheet music, PA systems, and powdered wigs for burgeoning composers. The scent of coffee wafts through the air as baristas grind local beans behind the enclosed counter of Note Worthy Café, and trained repair technicians remedy damages to instruments without the abuse of harsh chemicals. Thirteen spacious lesson rooms accommodate students and experienced, music-degree-bearing instructors for private instrumental and voice lessons, and a jam room, recording studio, and recital hall shelter musicians in every step of the creative process. In addition to its year-round services, City Music & Education Center hosts a smattering of seasonal events, including barbecue fundraisers for local school bands, battle of the bands for teenage groups, and recycling drives for glam-rock-era spandex pants.
The Grammy-winning Los Angeles Guitar Quartet has been plucking its way around the world for three decades, compiling a critically acclaimed catalog of recordings that experiment with and meld a potpourri of musical genres. For their December 11 concert, the energetic foursome will enchant eardrums with works by Rossini, Bizet, and other composers within the acoustically satisfying surroundings of the 560 Music Center's 1,100-seat E. Desmond Lee Concert Hall. This performance is the third of the 2010–11 season for the St. Louis Classical Guitar Society, which promotes classical fretted-instrument appreciation via education and performances by local and world-renowned musicians.
Scales Music's legion of experienced instructors teaches aspiring strummers the fundaments of acoustic guitar in a cozy, encouraging environment during 45-minute group lessons. Open to the young, the young at heart, and the incredibly old, each lesson guides a troop of four–six string pluckers through the basic principles of music theory and a musical rendition of Einstein's theory of relativity. After the opening session, rock 'n' roll undergrads begin learning how to play songs together. Spacious lesson rooms provide players with space to groove and free high-speed Internet access allows parents to browse the web. Although not included with today's Groupon, students can choose from a selection of rental guitars to take home for further practice with family bands led by golden-retriever sopranos.
