Feathered Friends Forever Parrot Rescue and Refuge houses more than 600 tropical birds that have been neglected, abandoned, or abused. Those that are not suited for adoption live at the sanctuary for the remainder of their lives, on a 9-acre site known as Parrot Paradise Park. The park boasts 16 outdoor flights where visitors can interact with the birds, as well as trees and blooming shrubs to enhance the habitat for both the birds and human park goers. Most of the birds reside in 23 outdoor aviaries and 200 interior cages, where volunteers provide fresh food, fruit, and water on a daily basis, in addition to working with the parrots, cleaning cages, and providing tours for the public.
In its century of existence, University of Colorado at Boulder’s Macky Auditorium Concert Hall has offered its stage to performers and lecturers by the likes of Dr. Jane Goodall, the Dalai Lama, and Eddie Izzard. The neo-Gothic-style venue impresses eyes with its complex sculpted patterns and honeycombed relief designs that embellish the entire ivory-hued interior. Stained-glass windows usher sunlight into the detailed crevices of the auditorium, where even the seats are etched with complex engravings and adorned with 19th-century chewing gum on their undersides.
For the instructors at Seigler's Karate Center, martial arts is about more than drilling strikes and forceful take-downs; it's about building confidence. With that philosophy in mind, the team aims to help people of all ages—from preschooler to retiree—overcome "I quit" attitudes with lessons emphasizing self-discipline and empathy. They exemplify martial arts' fat-burning benefits with cardio-kickboxing classes, focused workouts designed to shrink jean sizes while instilling self-defense techniques in students.
A 23-acre expanse of manicured grounds awaits soaring range balls at Wedges & Woods, a facility that houses a 300-yard driving range, short-game practice areas, and a pro shop. Golfers can line up their swings at any of the 40 hitting stations, including 10 covered stations outfitted with fans and lighting. Golfers can also work on finessing their shots at the short-game facility, where they’ll be able to aim at target greens and target caddies who have been inaccurate in their on-course distance readings.
It can take an artist years to apply the right brushstrokes to a canvas, but at Corks and Canvas, it only takes one night. During each three-hour painting session, a professional artist walks classes through every step of duplicating a piece of acrylic art. Made up of participants aged 16 and older, the group classes convene at a public venue such as a restaurant. Students can buy food and drinks to snack on throughout the night or smear onto their canvas if they’re tired of painting. For scheduled sessions and private events for adults or kids, Corks and Canvas supplies canvases, paint, brushes, easels, and aprons.
At more than 900 learning centers across the world, Sylvan offers kids a leg up through personalized, one-on-one programs prescribed by an in-depth skills assessment. Students build on past lessons to learn progressively, and sessions may hone in on different disciplines, granting kids the confidence to interpret literature and the rhetorical skills needed to negotiate a later bedtime. The positive mindset of personable, invested instructors helps to inspire kids to greater academic feats, as does a prize program that rewards hard work with CDs and gift cards.
