In 1987, indoor climbing was as unpopular in the Seattle area as breeding labradoodles. But Vertical World––a pioneer indoor climbing gym––introduced the city to the up-and-coming sport of rock climbing in a controlled environment. Since its inception, the gym has expanded to three other locations in Everett, Tacoma, and Redmond, the latter hosting eastside climbers for more than 20 years.
A team of experienced route creators challenges climbers with more than 200 bouldering, lead, or top-rope routes in a wide variety of difficulty levels. The gym hosts competitive youth teams that have gone on to national or world tournaments. The gym's staff of climbers and guides also leads outdoor excursions that build confidence and teach novices how to identify a rock wall in the wild.
The amenities inside the 17,000 square-foot PEAK Health & Fitness are plentiful: a weight room, cardio deck, and two group fitness rooms for classes such as yoga, Zumba, cycling, and Pilates. Members also have access to massages and tanning services, as well as an elite group of personal trainers who are available to provide one-on-one coaching or just acquaint members with the fitness equipment with a formal introduction. The club also has a kid’s play area that entertains children while adults work out and a juice bar that nourishes bodies with healthy fruit smoothies.
To fitness trainer Jon Chacon, the first order of business with any client is building a sturdy foundation of strength. His boot camp, athletic training, and strength camp incorporate both strength training and conditioning with bursts of high-intensity exercise. Pared-down workouts in a spartan facility use tools, such as ropes and sandbags, that emphasize agility and functional strength—values familiar to Chacon, whose experience ranges from commercial fishing to the Marine Corps. He also guides clients with nutrition and supplement guidelines, as well as monthly weight and fat measurements.
Working out turns into a dance party at Holly Hills Zumba, where people burn calories and fat the best way—by dancing. But not to worry, Zumba's fun, easy-to-follow dance moves are easy to master, and it's more about having fun than anything else, as the rhythms are set to high-energy Latin, and international beats. Along with Zumba, the studio offers workouts led by a personal trainer for another fat-burning option.
Although the certified trainers at Bold Bootcamp push exercisers to achieve their fitness goals, they also maintain a positive, no-pressure environment that allows for plenty of fun. Sweating side-by-side with their peers, guests can shed inches, build muscle, and ask each other "Which way to the beach?" during intense yet rewarding group boot-camp classes. For one-on-one attention, the trainers also perform physical assessments that gauge the client's fitness level and influence personalized exercise regimens. Clients can see proof of tangible results with before-and-after photos that are included with each assessment.
