For many vegans, eliminating animal products is a decision made in young adulthood, a break from the traditions they were raised with. Not so for Plum Bistro head chef Makini Howard—she was brought up eating vegan from infancy, but it hasn't changed her welcoming, flavor-first approach to her food. As she explained to Eco Stiletto (who caught her catering a dinner party thrown by Casey Affleck and Joaquin Phoenix), “We want to make sure you don’t miss the meat.”
Seattle Weekly has concurred that the restaurant "sets an inspired and flavorful table for all," naming Plum the city's Best Vegan Restaurant of 2012. Its philosophy of accessibility means that the huge array of organic produce on the menu—root vegetables, purple cauliflower, trumpet mushrooms, seasonal fruit—takes forms that will be familiar to foodies of all stripes. There are gourmet burgers that pack their protein punch via jerk tofu and oven-broiled lentils; steaks of breaded portobello and herb-grilled seitan; and handmade pastas with sauces as rich and creamy as any made with dairy. A local favorite is the Spicy Cajun Mac ‘n’ Yease, a piquant take on a classic nutritional yeast–based cheesy sauce.
Servers bear the generously proportioned dishes—accompanied by beer, wine, and cocktails made from gin and even kombucha—into a dining room fronted by floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto the sidewalk in the summer. Its rustic hardwood floors and tables fit right in with the gorgeously repurposed Piston & Ring Building, an automotive manufacturing building constructed in 1926. Once they leave, diners dazzled by their meals can replicate the dishes with help from Makini’s cookbook, with pages of innovative vegan dishes that provide an alternative to casseroles made from all the lunches left behind in the office fridge.
Becky and Jason She moved to the United States from Taiwan in 1977. Nine years later, they opened Peking, a bustling Chinese restaurant in Peachtree City. The business’s success became too much for the couple, which led to their temporary retirement—just like Michael Jordan's, except that Becky and Jason were on more posters at the time. With a renewed sense of energy, they opened their latest venture, She’s Bistro & Sushi Bar. The restaurant serves up Japanese cuisine—hibachi-grilled meats and sushi—along with Chinese dinner combinations that pair sesame chicken, mongolian beef, and other entrees with deep-fried appetizers, soup, and brown or fried rice.
With summer barbecue season bearing down like an angry bull, this meatberg ensures July evenings scented with charcoal and satisfaction, no matter the size of your crowd. The imminent meat-ark of USDA-graded steaks includes four bacon-wrapped 7-ounce filets, four 7-ounce filet strips, four 8-ounce Black Angus New York strips, four 7-ounce flat-iron tenders, six half-pound pure chopped-beef steaks (81/19 lean), and two 17-ounce porterhouse T-bones. Kick back with a bottle of hickory barbecue sauce and brush up on steak facts while you wait for the two-week processing and delivery.
The Pecan Restaurant's head chef Tony Morrow collects ingredients from the recipes of his favorite chefs, finding ways to work each of them into his own cuisine. The first flavor he fell in love with was pecans, a staple of his mother's cooking. Later in life, he encountered the rich spices of Cajun and Indian cooking, the perfectly prepared meats in French recipes, and the delicate pastas of the best Italian kitchens. He took these culinary experiences and, inspired, created his own masterpieces with each one, blending and changing each until he created a type of southern cooking all his own.
He serves his fusion food in a classic southern-style dining room full of light woods and white tablecloths complemented by the deep red curtains that hang around the space. During the eatery’s remodeling, a giant Coca-Cola advertisement—first painted in 1917—was discovered beneath the room’s drywall. Now re-exposed and retouched, it emblazons an exposed brick wall and adds last-century charm to the dining room, reminding its guests of a time when life was simpler and cola poured from the drinking fountains.
After praising J.R. Crickets' chicken wings, karaoke shindigs, and live music, Metromix went on to declare the late-night-dining destination a place where "[m]odern chic and good times meet." J.R. Crickets' culinary crew lightly fries or grills seafood, slathers baby back ribs in sauce, and carefully calibrates wings to three levels of spiciness. Diners can opt to take feasts to-go or kick back in the eatery, where TVs and live DJs forge an atmosphere as high-spirited as a haunted mountaintop.
