From Motown to contemporary hip-hop, the library of 200,000-plus songs encompasses the most-popular tunes since the 1950s. For each party, Firedog DJ's owner Joe Peralis and his fellow DJs spin up to 30 preselected requests. The rest of the time they draw upon more than two decades of experience as they gauge crowd response and pick tunes accordingly. Well versed in mics and VirtualDJ Pro software, the DJs can double as emcees, announcing dances and giving toasts at weddings and corporate functions.

The nugget of inspiration that sparked Photo In a Box occurred when one of the founders wanted a photo booth for his own wedding, but wouldn’t settle for inferior service or unrealistic prices. The two founders—who are also best friends—went with the obvious solution: start their own photo-booth company. Now they service DC, Northern Virginia, Maryland, and other more remote locales, toting along professional photo booths to events such as weddings, birthdays, or pre-New Year's Eve parties in July. Some of the booths snap high-resolution shots printed on classic photo-booth strips, while some come equipped with video and social media–integration capabilities. A prop box holds fun toys and costumes such as boas, tiaras, and oversized glasses, and Photo In a Box can customize each booth experience according to the occasion with personalized strip borders and props.

Inside the Rachel M. Schlesinger Concert Hall & Arts Center, works of art grow like flowers in a greenhouse. Amid the Mary Collier Baker Theater’s rich wood paneling and burgundy upholstery, symphony concerts burst to life, fed by stunning acoustics. The Margaret W. and Joseph L. Fisher Art Gallery, on the other hand, lets the work hanging on the walls do the talking, trumpeting the skills of local visionaries as they explore the bounds of aesthetic media.
