Q&A with Tabi Gendreau, Owner/Instructor

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

Our facility is filled with members that are like family to one another. The environment fosters relationships that keep you healthy emotionally and accountable physically. We incorporate weight training, cardiovascular training, stretching, and nutrition advice into our daily schedules.

Do you believe in the maxim, "No pain, no gain?? Why or why not?

We do not necessarily believe that you need to crawl out of the studio to feel like you have had a sucessful workout. After all, moving your body in any capacity burns more calories than sitting on the couch. With that said, we do encourage everyone to push themselves to their limit so they can see that they are stronger than they thought they were. There will be muscle soreness and fatigue, especially when starting a new routine, and our clients should embrace that.

What is the biggest mistake you see people make when trying to get fit on their own?

People lose motivation quickly when they are not challenged or pushed to improve themselves. So many people walk into a big gym and do not know what to do or where to start, which is why our personal touch sets us apart. Every time you come, you get the attention you need to maintain proper form and exercise to your fullest potential. We realize people are at different levels and allow folks to go at their own pace, but we also recognize strengths and guide clients to build on those, improving self-esteem and fitness levels.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

Fitness is fun. It's a great way to experience health and wellness. Enjoying fitness is the key to keeping exercise a part of your life. FitWorks will teach you all about the right way to exercise. We have a great variety of classes to keep you from getting bored and we change our schedule quarterly and add new classes. There are lots of benefits to being a fit person.

Boxing is renowned for its full-body fitness benefits and its high-intensity workouts. It's also considered by many to be a male-dominated sport. Dena Paolino is changing that. In 2009 she established Striking Beauties, the only female-centric boxing gym in New England, as a way to introduce women to the sport. At the gym, instructors lead beginners and experienced boxers through sessions full of jabs, strikes, and uppercuts, all of which help build muscle tone, boost endurance and agility, and develop hand-eye coordination.

They host Night Style Zumba classes, turning on the studio's black lights and donning neon bracelets that outline arms as they wave in time with twirls and steps. Along with Zumba's resonating beats, the experience lends the studio a pumping, nightclub vibe.

Even without black lights and glow sticks, though, the staff strives to make every type of workout an engaging one. The schedule includes more than one take on popular yoga and Pilates techniques, including PiYo and Yogalates. They also lead cardio-kickboxing drills, boot-camp routines, and the interval-training exercises of Tabata.
