Whenever Susan Price looks at a clock, it likely reads family time. She is a mother of three and the owner of Capturing Joy, a photography studio that specializes in outdoor photo shoots for high-school seniors, families, and kids. Most of her photos are in color, lit by sunlight, and set against rural backdrops, such as a field or a stack of Old MacDonald’s royalty checks. Susan is an outdoorsy type—she likes to garden and her family has a lot of pets—and one of her favorite photo-shoot tricks is to hand youngsters a few rabbits and snap pics of the ensuing cuteness.
Photographic Concepts' two experienced photographers frame, compose, and capture wall-worthy memories, employing classic lighting and tasteful backdrops. The flash-popping fiesta begins with a creative consultation, where clients can question the lens-wielders about backgrounds, props, and the color coordination of matching vegetable costumes, ensuring a smooth photo-snapping soiree. Gather the immediate family together for a 60-minute in-studio photo shoot, or let wizened high-schoolers go stag for senior portraits (a $75 value). Maternity pictures can showcase a mom-to-be's blossoming belly, and a new-baby photo invites infants to preen, primp, and pole-vault to glamorous stardom.

Even though they don't own a time machine, the photographers at Switch Blade Betties Pin-Up Photography can still transport their clients into the past. The staff transforms subjects into sultry retro models with midcentury hair, makeup, and costume, giving them free rein of a studio filled with inspiration, such as vintage furnishings and photographs of Mamie Eisenhower in a leather jacket. During shoots, photographers direct and give advice as they incorporate props ranging from feather fans and country-western hats to diner counters and real classic cars. Sometimes, they organize photography sessions at cities around the country, uniting participants under a common retro theme, such as Ice Cream & Hot Dog Stand or Vintage Vixens & Hot Rod Betties.
