Working as a pediatrician in 2004, Dr. Joe Cangas noticed that many local children didn’t wear helmets while riding their bicycles. Concerned for their safety, he began talking to children at local schools and founded Helmets First! as his mission grew. As the Helmet Doctor, he conducts regular talks at neighborhood schools, clubs, and community centers, teaching youth about the importance of wearing helmets. His organization also runs events where it distributes free helmets to youth from low-income backgrounds after measuring their heads for the proper fit. Only with a proper fit are helmets effective at preventing traumatic head injuries. Since its inception, Helmet First! has donated more than 14,000 helmets to local youth.
Joan Krueger—a certified hypnotherapist who has been practicing since 1994—has her own metaphor to describe the subconscious mind: she likens it to a filing cabinet filled with the programs that help you function. She believes the key is to rewrite the programs, changing the information so we can function in different ways.
At Joan Krueger Hypnosis, she helps to change habits such as smoking cigarettes overeating, or biting your fingernails. She does this by bringing clients into a relaxed state during which their subconscious mind becomes receptive to suggestions. She then delivers the suggestion that will enable you to create the changes you desire. Krueger claims a high success rate: according to her website, 80% of clients are able to quit smoking after just one visit.
When Studio Rue claimed Fox 2's Best of STL for fitness studios, the award was well-earned. After all, its head instructor Kelly Ruesing, certified in Stott Pilates, approaches Pilates from a fresh angle: for medical purposes. She uses the practice as a complement to physical therapy to help clients recover from injuries more quickly. That's why the class schedule includes sessions set at varying intensities, from power Pilates and classes that use the tower or Reformer, to gentle Hatha flow yoga.
Stationed within the soothing confines of Primary Care Chiropractic, Serenity Massage’s team of licensed massage therapists banishes stress and promotes relaxation with seven distinct massage modalities. Swedish massages melt knotted muscles into relaxed ooze and reenergize limbs with firm yet gentle pressure. The deep-tissue massage locates muscles off the beaten track, attempting to break up pockets of tension, toxins, and long-forgotten beef jerky that bones were saving for later. To take relaxation to the next level, clients can add on a scalp, foot, or hydro-massage treatment to any massage or simply take in the surroundings while sipping a complimentary cup of tea.
The holistic-care experts of Rejuva My Skin can communicate with skin cells using color and light. They customize each treatment by saturating the face with a choice of 12 different colors to target skin problems, using microcurrents to penetrate deep into the cellular layers of the skin. With the combination of microcurrents and light-wave energy, they aim to smooth fine lines, hydrate the skin, and minimize bags under the eyes.
The modern athlete is a walking sculpture—made of chiseled brawn that can leap through the air, dart across a field, and pull off wearing a tank top that says, “The Muscles Not Necessarily from Brussels.” Given this grandeur, it's understandable that some athletes might overlook the means to the end. At Fitzmaurice Performance, co-founders Brian and Shawn Fitzmaurice and their highly experienced staff strive to offer athletes a well rounded path to overall wellness.
While the gym's 6,000-square-foot space lends it a "big box" feel, the family-owned Fitzmaurice Performance prides itself on the tight-knit feelings it fosters among its clientele. Brian and Shawn can now boast 20 years in the personal-training business and 13 years of ownership of Fitzmaurice Performance, offering one-on-one services as well as group classes. They take a four-pronged approach, focusing on performance training, nutrition counseling, motivation and recovery. These facets comprise their 360 Fitness program.
Those looking to get fit outside of the sports realm benefit from their expertise as well with personal-training and small group personal training classes. The instructors lead sessions including hallmark 360 fitness classes, which incorporate exercise equipment such as suspension bands and Power Plate machines. For good measure, Fitzmaurice Performance also has its clients channel their inner Rocky Balboa as they run up and down the gym's stairs.
