In addition to selling cheeky T-shirts, CBC Fitness makes workouts accessible to everyone through online weekly exercise routines and toning group classes every Saturday with trainer Jessica Cheeks. Jessica also fashions custom workouts during personal-training sessions, which happen at clients' favorite parks or gyms.
The instructors at ORS Pilates and Yoga are passionate about healthful movement—after all, they started out in fields including dance and physical therapy. After receiving Body Arts and Sciences training and certification, they began sharing their enthusiasm with students of all levels. Today, participants sweat their way through their group and private yoga and Pilates lessons, using Balanced Body Pilates equipment such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, and Avalon Chair. The trainers teach the BASI Block system, which incorporates all bodily muscle groups and pocket watches in the span of an hour.
When you enter Tapout Training Center’s main workout area and turn around, you’ll see a large graffiti mural with the word “tapout” clutched between the talons of a red-eyed bald eagle. The bird reminds everyone why they’re here—to partake in workouts that merge exercise and self-defense. Students can spar in the octagon ring, wrestle in the grappling area, punch and kick hanging bags, or sign up for one of many fitness classes, including boxing, muay thai kickboxing, and jujitsu. Every activity is monitored and motivated by an experienced staff led by Brazilian jujitsu and MMA instructor Frank Colcher, a mixed martial artist who’s been able to break oil paintings over his knee for more than a quarter of a century.
Pilates Plus By Eden Sassoon's instructors lead group classes that augment the fundamental principles of Pilates with dynamic muscle workouts. The studio utilizes the SPX system, which adheres to Joseph Pilates' postural alignment and flexibility exercises as a foundation for improving muscular stamina, increasing cardio respiratory endurance, and accelerating metabolism. While helping students strengthen and tone bodies, specialized instructors infuse lessons with areas of their own expertise. For example, instructor Kiki enhances her lessons by teaching techniques acquired after 15 years of ballet experience and years becoming a black belt in tae kwon do. Brian enlivens his signature classes with a background that includes martial arts, breakdancing, and being raised by a pack of killer whales. Private lessons are also available for one-on-one instruction.
At Gym Box, stereos pump out an energizing soundtrack as clients lift, run, and sweat amidst night-club-inspired decor. Mirrors reflect the silver and black of the new equipment that fills the strength and cardio rooms, and indoor cycling classes are held in the alternating glow of red and purple lights. Boxing classes thwack and strike the heavy bags that dangle from the ceiling of the training room, and TRX classes sculpt stronger bodies from an assortment of hanging ropes and cables.
