Motorcycles line the outside of Got Rods LLC, waiting for the expert mechanics to address their engine needs. The technicians repair small motors in any kind of vehicle, from motorcycles to snow blowers. They also add upgrades to shiny steeds within the garage.
At Tree-Tech, tree fertilization involves much more than a simple scoop of soil scattered around the base of a trunk. Instead, one of the company's technicians––each of whom is managed by a certified arborist––walks the base of the tree and injects an organic fertilizer 8 to 12 inches into the ground, feeding the roots directly with the time-released formula. This helps trees grow healthier and more resilient, which is exactly what Tree-Tech’s founders Rob Finnesey and James Bellis hoped to accomplish when they opened their business more than 27 years ago. Alongside fertilization, they beautify landscapes with plant-pruning and tree-removal services, as well as insect and disease control for yards prone to ticks, weevils, or bouts of pneumonia.
Tree-Tech also encompasses a secondary business, Lawn-Tech, whose employees specialize in lawn care and sprinkler-system installation. Together, Tree-Tech and Lawn-Tech tend to more than 10,000 residential and commercial clients and have manicured the lawns of PGA-grade golf courses. The founders and their more than 100 employees also share a deep interest in bettering their community, donating a portion of their profits to the Special Olympics New Jersey, as well as to historical restoration projects and local schools.
You never know what you’ll find at Buddy’s Small Lots. It might be a rechargeable kids’ go-kart, or a portable, pop-up beach canopy to keep the sun from staring at you in your swimsuit. Or it might be a Sunbeam stand mixer, the latest as-seen-on-TV invention, or a wood patio table. In any case, what it will be is steeply discounted. With a rapidly changing inventory of brand-new items, Buddy’s is just about impossible to sum up. Along with outfitting a home or dispatching holiday shopping in one swoop, customers can leave with the makings of a decent meal—the store also sells popular brands of milk, eggs, canned goods, and other grocery staples.
The lands that now make up the Reeves-Reed Arboretum have been walked upon by Lenni Lenape Native Americans, tilled by Revolutionary-era farmers, and built into a sprawling country estate by their turn-of-the-century owners. Today, more than 13 acres of cultivated lawns, gardens, and woodlands welcome nature lovers who wander along trails, visit the Wisner House—a Colonial Revival shingle-style abode designed in 1889—and partake of educational programming to learn why tree trunks don’t have electrical outlets. The arboretum maintains 5.5 acres of formal gardens, including an azalea garden, an herb garden, a rock garden, and a rose garden whose first blossoms set down roots back in 1925. Before setting off to explore these leafy environs, families can drop by the Discovery Center to pick up a backpack with binoculars, field guides, and a magnifying glass for examining the subtle differences between a centipede and a Twizzler. At the Wesson Family Nature Grove, visitors can use a viewing scope to peer at the birds visiting the fish pond. On event days, guests can also stop by lectures, join festivities such as Maple Sugar Fest, or listen to the strains of jazz wafting through the night air.
