Like many of the best ideas, ESB Brewing came to be over clinking glasses filled with cold beer. Rather than pigeonholing themselves with super-stylized brews, the three friends behind ESB wanted instead to create something totally eclectic?something to please any palate. The result is a taproom full of everything from pale ales and super wheaty beers to stouts and double IPAs, all of which change from week to week. To keep the rest of the senses engaged, the brewery invites live musicians to perform or harmonize with the people sipping their beer.
You don?t have to be a professional boxer to benefit from boxing training. In fact, many of the athletes who've trained at Gym Rat Boxing & Fitness have been your run-of-the-mill pro basketball players. Coach Todd?s dynamic, results-driven regimen helps people of all fitness levels?from all-stars to amateurs?attain a wide array of fitness goals without resorting to repetitive gym routines. Instructors use cardio-boosting calisthenics, footwork training, and shadowboxing techniques to help students lose weight and build muscle tone over time. Classes cover basic striking skills as students launch flurries of jabs and crosses at speed bags and heavy bags stuffed with the shirts of high-school bullies. Outside the ring, the gym offers personal-training sessions and intensive boot camps as well as access to the facility's free weights and cardio equipment.
microbrews to complement its Italian-American bistro-style menu. Brewmaster Fran Andrewlevich—whose past work has won gold and silver medals at the Great American Beer Festival—whips up lagers, pilsners, and seasonal beers right onsite. In the open kitchen, chefs feed flatbread bruschetta and hand-stretched pizza dough to a hungry brick oven, and craft ranch burgers filled with Angus beef, bacon, monterey jack cheese, and dreams of running away to join the circus concession stand.
As one of the world’s largest beer brewers, this Jacksonville outpost of Anheuser Busch is surprisingly open about its process. The looming facility offers free tours on how they brew and package Budweiser, with guests catching glimpses of the state-of-the-art technology, giant tanks, carefully controlled temperature rooms and bottling and packaging facilities, all of which can be seen through glass viewing windows. There’s also information on the recycling program, energy recovery and conservation of wildlife in the surrounding Jacksonville wetlands. After the tour, stop in the hospitality room and sample some beer. For the truly curious, the more in-depth Beermaster Tour is for true connoisseurs and a one-off Beer School class introduces patrons to different beer styles, proper pouring and a variety of craft beer and food pairings. There’s also a gift shop on hand, and occasional events take place on the property.
