To call The Body Shop a mere skin and body care store is to miss half of what makes it special. Late founder Dame Anita Roddick was a pioneer for ethical business practices; upon opening her first store in Brighton, England, in 1976, she developed company values such as "Defend Human Rights" and "Protect The Planet." She somehow balanced principles and profit, partnering in global campaigns with UNICEF, Greenpeace, Amnesty International, and the United Nations, all while ultimately expanding her brand into 2,500 locations in over 60 international markets. After her death in 2007, then-British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said, ?She campaigned for green issues for many years before it became fashionable to do so and inspired millions to the cause by bringing sustainable products to a mass market. . . . She was an inspiration.?

Indeed, the Body Shop exhibits an eco-friendliness and social consciousness that's hard to come by in a company of its size. Its products have been fair-trade since 1987, and its Against Animal Testing movement led to an EU-wide ban of animal testing of cosmetics. The products are made from ingredients harvested from around the world: shea butter from Ghana goes into body scrubs and butters, and Indian artisans craft wooden massagers and tote bags that are screenprinted by hand. But all that isn't to say the company's production practices overshadow its final products. Skincare treatments such as the brand?s iconic body butters, facial products, and gift collections often appear in Allure, Marie Claire, Lucky, Seventeen and other national publications.

Dr. Raymond Frye kindles his passion for beautiful smiles by developing convenient at-home pearl-polishing devices to forge dentist-chair results. His ultrasonic toothbrush invigorates morning routines by scrubbing teeth at the speed of 30,000 dynamic strokes per minute. A built-in alert sounds every 30 seconds, letting brushers know to switch areas and reward themselves with a piece of saltwater taffy, before a two-minute timer signals the end of cleaning. For immediate enhancement, regimens such as the Icing 30 Carat system, JägerWhite gel, and Shazzam White gel brighten beams with varying strengths of carbamide peroxide, eschewing the expense and hassle of in-office treatments. Specialized whitening trays, which shape to fit the mouth in an easy at-home molding session, contour to the gum line to keep the whitening solution focused on its pearly objectives, never veering off to burnish marble statues or someone else’s teeth.

High-fashion frames from Prada, Cartier, and Michael Kors line the walls at Absolutely Optical and Eye Trends. The 3,000 designer-quality frames in stock on any given day include an extensive selection crafted from long-lasting materials such as titanium, stainless steel, or virgin zyl plastic imbued with fade-proof color. Technicians wander through the shop, waiting to fit the frames with distortion-free sunglass lenses, the newest generation of antireflection lenses, or googly eyes so it seems like you are awake while guarding a boring art museum. For prescriptions, patrons can consult the onsite optometrist, Dr. Jay Weil, who not only tests vision but also bolsters eye health with procedures ranging from hydrating treatments for dryness to LASIK surgery.

Licensed massage therapist Amanda Howard first conceived of Crystal Blue Health Spa for a school project, and she realized her dream with the spa's opening in 2011. In the interim, she crafted a menu of soothing spa services, including massages, body scrubs, and facials. Amanda navigates the treacherous terrain of knotted musculature during Swedish, deep-tissue, hot-stone, and aromatherapy massages, which wheedle backs into relinquishing stockpiled stress, tension, and missing socks hidden beneath shoulder blades. For surface-level pampering, the spa's resident aesthetician treats visages to deep-cleansing facials and exfoliating body scrubs. The hot-chocolate scrub emulates its wintertime namesake with a sweetly scented, warm elixir infused with Giovanni PureOrganic Technology?an essential-oil medley designed to nourish and heal wizened pelts?and the hypoallergenic tropical scrub's jojoba, macadamia, avocado, and sweet-almond oils replenish thirsty pores more effectively than dunking them in a pool of Gatorade.
