The Yoga Tree's team of attentive yoga instructors steers posers toward unlocking their loftier potential with physical and spiritual guidance during 60- to 75-minute Hatha-inspired yoga classes. Students in 75-minute all-level Hatha yoga classes flow through a deliberate series of movements that combine synchronized posture flow, conscious breathing, and meditation to cultivate strength, flexibility, and a growing awareness of the body's desire to star in a reality show. Yogis in need of milder movement can modify poses in the all-level class or opt for more serene stances in gentle Hatha sessions. The 60-minute Yin yoga curriculum strengthens deep tissues in the hips and lower back with a series of challenging poses that extend the body's range of motion, turning ordinary hip flexors into mechanical-bull-foiling machines.
In preparation for their first class, new students are encouraged to hydrate, avoid eating for two to three hours beforehand, and ignore any household chores that stimulate even minor sweating. Bringing one or two bath towels, extra water, and comfortable workout clothing that can get sweaty ensures maximum comfort and a full backpack. For those wishing to immediately wash the stink of self-actualization from their bodies after a session, showers and separate men and women’s changing areas are readily available.
Ignite Fitness’s expert trainers help clients eradicate unwanted weight through a trifecta of group fitness classes, one-on-one personal training, and nutrition coaching. Their signature boot camps do much of the calorie torching. Filled with quick bursts of cardio and strength training, workouts change each day to ensure that muscles never fall into a predictable routine. Instructors also lead yoga and cycling classes, which add to the variety while also targeting their own specialized muscle groups. While much of their focus remains on group classes, instructors also take time to help guests achieve individual goals, scheduling both private personal-training sessions and rehabilitation sessions.
In the shadows of the Catalina foothills, Prestige Fitness's trainers inspire their clients to reach new heights. In 120 small group classes a week, instructors show exercisers how to push their muscles to the limit in TRX suspension sessions or get their blood pumping in vigorous spinning classes. Staff use the Polar BodyAge® system to assess clients' fitness level—a computerized fitness-assessment tool that measures oxygen usage, flexibility, and what percentage of the body is composed of Mountain Dew. The center also hosts whole body vibration machines, which tone muscles rapidly by inducing rapid involuntary muscle contractions in major groups.
Power House Pilates instructor Lorraine Edminster seeks to expand the physical strength and range of motion of her students with workouts based on the teachings of Ron Fletcher. Fletcher’s modern Pilates discipline, known as Fletcher Work, relies heavily on slow, dissected movements and percussive breathing techniques, which require practitioners to respire with sound and to the rhythm of the Batman theme song. Each 55-minute private lesson convenes within the calming beige walls of a private studio, where students toughen cores both on the mat and with the help of specialized equipment. Over the course of three sessions, exercises can progressively define abdominals through increased resistance and by drawing on a six-pack in Sharpie.
