Clint Robinson's U.S. Air Force duty took him around the world, but it was his time in South Korea that made the biggest mark. There, he learned the art of tae kwon do—and the positive fitness and values associated with it. When he returned to the states and left the Air Force, it didn't take long for him to found his own martial-arts school. More than 40 years and 19 locations later, Robinson's Taekwondo continues to thrive on the same principles on which Clint founded his business: excellence, personal attention, and tradition. He now counts children's, adult, and family programs as part of his curriculum. With continued training, students of all ages not only hone their fitness, but also improve their mental sharpness, self-confidence, and discipline.

When you're learning self-defense moves, you want to be trained by an expert. With almost 40 years under his black belt, Doyle McMahan is an expert. The head instructor at Dragon Star Karate, McMahan built his resume as a member of the U.S. Army's Special Operations and a trainer for the Army's self-defense program. Through these experiences and his stints as public speaker and a consultant, he developed an energetic style that informs his interactive classes. He instills discipline and self-esteem in youngsters during sessions for kids, teaches effective self-defense techniques in Krav Maga classes, and helps members shed pounds and build confidence with KravFit Kickboxing.
Upcoming bout or not, Boxing Academy will train you like a professional boxer. During youth and adult boxing classes, USAB-certified instructors Abram and Kim Espinosa emphasize strength and conditioning as much as technical aspects such as punching, blocking, footwork, and lifting belts over your head. And though the boxing sessions are a workout by themselves, Boxing Academy schedules personal-training sessions and boot-camp classes for extra measure.
At Folsom MMA, students train like professionals regardless of whether they hope to step inside the competition octagon or just build a better body. During lessons, students grapple, jostle, and roll over 2,000 square feet of Dollamur wrestling mats, with octagon-style fencing around the sides to simulate real MMA conditions. Instructors educate in all the popular fighting arts, including muay thai, jujitsu, and no-gi submission grappling, and help participants build mental toughness and burn calories. In the past, the gym has even hosted heralded fight star Chuck Liddell, who stopped by to greet the community and share tips, such as what color toenail polish opponents find most intimidating.
